it's a premodern tourney; I've never played the format but it's the card pool I grew up playing with, and one of my good friends is a serious spike and he's making me a classic Sligh/Red Deck Wins/Burn pile to play. I've been goldfishing with it and theorycrafting all weekend and treated today as mostly an additional weekend day

It's lower power than Legacy--it's basically everything from Fourth Edition through what I'll always think of as the 'nu metal magic era' (Odyssey and Onslaught blocks)

It's a lot more accessible to play, and generally they let you use the gold-bordered world champ cards and other collector sets that aren't legal in 'real' competitive play so a lot of the reserve list staples are easier to access (you're allowed to use more recent printings of cards that were legal in the time frame that the card pool's from but most people try to keep to the classic aesthetic)

Basically yes is the sense I get from my crash course into the meta but there are two things--1 is that there's still room for innovation around the margins and that marginal innovation can actually be more meaningful because the decks are mostly 'solved'--so minor changes in cards in a deck can have a larger impact

2 is that you can always shape a format with a ban list--if something gets too good (like Land Tax did last year apparently--as I said I'm a newcomer to this) then you can nuke it or nerf it and then shake up the meta.

I've always thought it would be interesting to have a format that had a randomized, rotating banlist--like for a 6 month period choose 20 cards semi-randomly based on composition of top meta decks and ban or restrict those. Or have a mandatory inclusion rule--like pick a random common of each color and every deck has to maindeck at least one of those commons.

You'd probably still want to have a standing banlist for super meta warping things like Balance or Necropotence, though.

To be honest I got back into MTG once she had already decided to leave me as a 'here's something I can do on my phone other than listen to shrieking and whining all the time'

i think every major breakup i've had was preceded by retreating into distracting nerd shit. it was only later in life that i realized what i was doing subconsciously.

this is why making no-fault divorce socially acceptable has been an unmitigated disaster. a man will exhaust every avenue before he accepts failure. whereas without social pressure a woman will back out the moment she sees an aspirational bathmat.
