The reason all the good spy novels were by Ian Fleming and John LeCarre (and the reason the latter were interesting) is because UK foreign intelligence services were supposed to be running train on Russia going back to the 18th century. We could never get spies like they had. One time we got this English dood to work for us, but he turned out to be a double agent for Russia.

Maybe that should have been an early warning. Who knows if UK intelligence was ever really that good? But even now it's all we have on Russia. The whole war has been run based primarily on assumptions about Russia that came from the UK. They're supposed to be smarter than us. They just are. That's just how people fucking think. Boris Johnson says "don't sign that treaty" and people just assume he knows wtf he's doing.

"For the sake of its own reputation it suited the KGB to reveal "Abel's" nine years of being an undetected agent in the United States as a triumph by a dedicated NKVD member. The idea that the name of the master spy was Rudolf Abel replaced the reality of Fisher. During his eight years as an illegal resident, Fisher was one of the most successful KGB agents in the United States. Even though he appears not to have recruited a single agent, he identified potential spies and managed and expanded the existing network so well that the head of the CIA, Allen Dulles, said that he wished that he had even one agent as good as Abel operating within the USSR.[69"
Irony: he was worthless as a source of information about Russia. He didn't know jack shit about what Russia was doing. He was just a courier. We traded him because he wasn't worth shit to us, even though by our own admission he was better than any spy we ever had in Russia.

That's why people who claim to know anything about Russia are ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS flat out retarded and wrong. English people just plain suck since WWI.
