agreed, so japan's only hope was to bait US carriers into a battle like midway and win a decisive victory*. but instead they got crushed because we cracked their radio code and knew it was coming (and repaired the yorktown so fast)

* unlikely this would shatter US population's willingness to support war but who knows. i think this is how the japanese saw their victory at the battle of tsushima in the russo-japanese war

I don't know if this is covered in the vid but one thing people often omit about Midway is that the Americans knew virtually everything about Japan's "secret" plan because there was so much radio chatter about it and the Japanese speaking Americans in US intelligence figured out exactly what they were going to do. They knew there was going to be a big ass attack, and that Japan was going to launch it on an small American outpost with a small force while holding a much larger force back. Japan anticipated that the US would come retake the island head on with a large force and their carriers would surprise the US. But the US foresaw everything and surprise attacked their main fleet from behind. This is critical context for understanding Midway that we basically sucker punched them from behind. It's kind of a stupid battle to analyze because of this reason - the enemy saw it coming.

Also the other key factor in the battle was the Jap carriers sucked ass. They were poorly designed and went up in flames fast, and the Zeros were shittier than the US planes. The whole thing was a catastrophe. The "Japanese perspective" on this battle is we were massive idiots and tipped our hand to the Americans by talking about it too much, tried to surprise attack them but got surprise attacked ourselves, and our carriers and planes were garbage, and we lost the whole war all at once. So I guess lesson for the future don't be completely fucking retarded.

It's also important to recognize that the US sacrificed the people on the island of Midway itself in order to get into position and not alert the Japs of their counter-attack.

Settle down Cletus, from the Japanese perspective simply means as the Japanese conducted the battle with the fog of war obscuring American ship locations, lack of radar, and lack of intel knowing that the USA knew about it. It's a good vid.

I know but it's like saying, here watch this massive intelligence blunder where it was over before it started. It was a strategic blunder as well. The whole thing was really really bad for Japan before the first engagement. It was both militarily dumb and ruinous, and a catastrophic failure even before the battle. That's how bad it was. It was recklessly stupid and irresponsible. Now you could say that was true about Pearl Harbor as well but at least they had the element of surprise in that one. In this one they got surprise attacked due to all of their compounding failures. The sad thing is that their carriers were so shitty they couldn't even take out American targets because they didn't have enough aircraft to begin with. It was a bush league operation.

Now taken into account that it was over before it began debating whether they should have turned left or right is immaterial. The whole exercise is for naught. They shouldn't have started a war with a more powerful country, and then that they did they should have had an entirely different strategy. So given all of their compounding errors that led them down a path to TOTAL RUINATION beyond the point at which ANYTHING could have been turned around in the grand scheme, do you still find it "interesting" that this dude "could have" launched a sortie earlier and/or turned in a better direction and possibly staved off TOTAL DEFEAT (even though realistically he couldn't have either in the small sense or the larger one)?

Midway was when it should have been apparent to any rational adversary that the war was over. It's not that different from Ukraine for the last 18 months. Regardless of the thinking that went into it, there was no way Japan was going to bounce back from that loss. They were assholes for keeping up the fight for three more years and we couldn't drop enough nukes on them.
