Here is where you can see the beginnings of the pattern that would be set for all militaries established by Japan in the colonies it would invade. It's all about getting on dat extractive resources tip. If the military can run the timber mills and the oil derricks directly, using its people, it can also decide who gets it, and it can even sell it to raise money. The emperor can't do shit about that because he doesn't have another source of timber or oil, and he can't stop the military from raising money off that shit. Even if he cuts off funding for the army, the army can keep going just based on the industries it controls:

PS you can't understand Asia without knowing how and where this business model was allowed to continue after Japan pulled out. There's all kinds of factors that affected that shit.

One thing to take note of is that in Thailand the military is seen as a cleansing force. Every time they experiment with democracy, they WHOOPS get the richest guy in the country as POTUS. Then shit gets all corrupt and people get pissed, then the military overthrows the government for a few years before elections are held again. During that few years people are thankful that the military stepped in and overthrew the democratically elected government. It's like the reset button. A bunch of countries are like this. Pakistan.

So far this is the only video I can find that gives you any insight into Japan's decision to get dat oil out of Sumatra. Stalin just withdrew his forces from Mongolia. If ur Japan u can go and get dat Siberian oil. What's stopping u? If u are the commander of the Japanese navy, before you can even have a discussion about the wisdom of attacking the USA, u gotta ask "hey what about the wisdom of attacking the USSR right now since it's pinned down by are ally in a desperate effort to save its capital? Why can't we start a war with Russia and not the USA right at this moment?"

What if Japanese hadn't been HUMILIATED by Russia years earlier? That's the only thing that worked on Japan back then. Total humiliation.
