They thought all the limestone got used up. Then they thought it was invasions and civil wars. Then they thought it was climate change. But the only explanation that isn't contradicted by the evidence is that they were operating on a calendar that told them to abandon their cities every 400 years, go into the jungle for 400 years, and then restart civilization after that 400-year cycle was over.
