Animals have fixed action patterns. Part of the process of domesticating dogs was breaking their predatory fixed action pattern. Certain traits can be and have been bred out of breeds. Bird dogs, for example, will stalk, chase, and capture, but they won’t kill or dissect. Either humans dissect for them or there is a sufficient break in their behavior that their quarry is no longer recognized as quarry and is instead interpreted as food.

Your dog flushing and retrieving are all steps in its predatory pattern. A properly bred retriever will instinctively stop before killing or dissecting. Because of this, your hunting dog absolutely will protect chickens. Every hunting dog we had growing up lived right alongside our chickens and would run off foxes. Puppies might chase chickens initially, but they get bored with it.
Edit. Saw your edit and no, I’m under no such delusion that bird dogs and sheep dogs are the same thing. You, on the other hand, seem woefully inexperienced at hunting. |
