assume alternative is top private in flyover that places 10% of the class in ivy+ schools, does a boarding school like that offer enough from either an outcome or just social experience aspect to make it worth the additional $?

lol absolutely not, they are an extravagance that, if you can afford it, is not going to make a difference past the advantages your rich kid already had, for some random poor who gets put on a scholarship to a place like that it could probably be a big deal, but come on, rich kids are already rich

its not worth it from a financial standpoint if you think its going to lead to your kid getting some great job down the line but if you think hell enjoy it and itll be a good place for him to spend four years its fine if youre willing to shell out the money.

good point, they're offering to let him do one of their 5 or so week summer programs for free, so we're thinking about letting him do that to see what he thinks.

prob not the best idea if your kid isn't 99%tile. the median outcome is still a step below schools like WUSTL. if you're fine wasting $300k on an UG like Colby or Bucknell, by all means. having said that, your kid would no doubt rub shoulders with scions and offspring of heads of state...so there is some value in it. boarding school friendships can last a lifetime.

makes sense, he can cruise and likely finish at the upper end of his current school, probably better to do that then have to compete with highly concentrated set of high achievers.

jesuit hs that's a peer to his k12, though probably has a more socially 'diverse' student body due to emphasis on scholarships & workstudy.

put the money you would have invested in the school in a high yield account and your kid can retire at 30.

This is like asking if some $9,000 3 piece suit is worth it.

It's obviously not even close to worth it for 99% of people. The only people who it is worth it to are the people who are really interest in $9,000 3-piece suits.

It doesn't cost all that much more than the local (I guess regional) elite prep school, so really the question is whether/how far you want to ship your kid off.

If I lived in middle/east tennessee, I'd send my kid to montgomery bell or baylor way before andover or exeter.

I had an extremely grueling biglawesque HS education

Also, I was surrounded by people who were more or less as intelligent as I was

I've gotten life-changing jobs thanks to former HS acquaintances and proud alums

So it pretty much matters as much as going to a good college or good grad school, with the same caveats applying
