Vatican-recognized ‘miracle baby’ arrested in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Hampton teenager whose survival as a newborn was recognized by the Vatican as a miracle has been arrested in Newport News in connection to a shooting.

According to officials with the U.S. Marshals Service, 19-year-old Tyquan Johnson was taken into custody Wednesday on Chestnut Avenue just before 9 a.m. in connection to a double shooting that occurred in Rhode Island. Officials say another person was also arrested.

Newport Police in Rhode Island initially announced that a warrant was issued for Johnson and that he was considered armed and dangerous.

Johnson was recognized by Pope Leo XIV as an official miracle for his birth story in January 2007.

10 On Your Side first reported that Johnson was born about three weeks premature in Rhode Island after his mother experienced complications during pregnancy. Family members said he stopped breathing shortly after birth and was dead for 65 minutes. He unexpectedly regained a heartbeat after the attending physician broke out in prayer.

Johnson faces the following charges:

Felony assault with a firearm

Firing in a compact area

Johnson, 19, had a warrant out for his arrest. Police allege that he and a second, currently unidentified suspect were responsible for a shooting that wounded two people at the Park Holm housing complex in the city of Newport on the night of Sunday, July 19.
