Imagine being someone like Gen. Burnside at Fredericksburg or Gen. Hooker at Chancellorsville. You are doing something you trained your whole life for, you fail spectacularly and the bloodlines of thousands of your troops are permanently erased because you suck so bad at your job.

How do you get past something like that and go on and live your life? Even comparatively successful generals like Lee and Grant had memories of Pickett's Charge and Cold Harbor haunting them.

Most people couldn't even begin to cope with that.
