compliancemos, explain:

HOWLAND TWP., Ohio - All six people killed in a plane crash in Howland Township Sunday morning have been identified.

The Trumbull County Coroner identified the pilot of the plane as 63-year-old Joseph Maxin and the co-pilot as 55-year-old Timothy Blake. The other four passengers were identified as 68-year-old Veronica Weller, 67-year-old James Weller II, 36-year-old John Weller and 34-year-old Maria Weller.

The six were killed when a plane crashed seven minutes after taking off from Youngstown Regional Airport. The plane went down about two miles west of the airport, in the backyard of a home in a heavily wooded area.

Howland Township Fire Chief Raymond Pace identified the crash as the deadliest in the area's history.

Following the release of the victims' identities, 21 News has received multiple statements including one from the Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) mourning the loss of the victims, particularly Maxin.

Maxin had served as WRPA's Director of Compliance.

"A selfless public servant and pilot, Joseph dedicated his life to serving the Mahoning Valley. From his work in the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office to the instrumental role of launching the flight school in collaboration with Youngstown State University, he was committed to educating the next generation of aviation professionals," the statement reads.

The Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office also released a statement on Maxin, who worked as an assistant prosecutor from 1990 to 2007 and returned in 2017 to continue his service in the criminal division before leaving once again to focus on aviation.

"He was not only a skilled attorney, but also a beloved friend and colleague known for his kindness, good nature and one-of-a-kind humorous personality," the statement reads.

YSU also released a statement mourning the losses of Maxin and Blake, as well as the Wellers.

"We are especially grieving alongside the Weller family, whose longstanding legacy and support have meant so much to YSU over the years, and we mourn the loss of the two pilots who were scheduled to join YSU's aviation program as instructors," the statement reads.

The passengers were all apart of the Weller family, who owned Liberty Steel in Warren. James was the son of James Weller the first who at one point co-owned Sharon Speedway.

Veronica appeared on 21 News 10 years ago speaking about her book "Race Again, the Power of Faith and Family” detailing their journey after their son crashed during a race in Charlotte. Former 21 sports anchor Mike Ackelson conducted the interview and over time became close to the family saying what stood out about them was their outpouring kindness for the community.

"I can't say enough good things about these people I mean they are just totally tremendous people,” Ackelson said. "Truly it's a bond ship that I'm going to miss because they were just absolutely great people.”

The Youngstown/ Warren Regional Chamber issued a statement saying they are deeply saddened about the loss of all six people.

"The Weller family’s contributions in the steel industry are part of the region’s proud industrial history and helped shape the economic fabric of the Valley for generations. Their loss is immeasurable, both personally and professionally, and their absence will be profoundly felt across the Valley.

We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Joe Maxin, a leader in aviation, a dedicated educator at Youngstown State University’s new flight school, and a trusted voice at the Western Reserve Port Authority. We stand with Anthony Trevena and the Port Authority team as they grieve a colleague and friend. Our thoughts are also with Mike Hillman and the JETS FBO team at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. In this time of sorrow, we hold all those impacted in our thoughts and prayers," the statement reads.

The Trumbull County Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol received a call reporting the crash at 7:01 a.m. Sunday, in the area of King Graves Road and Henn Hyde Road.

Officials said in a press conference that two of the deceased were crew members and four were passengers.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has opened an investigation into the crash of the Cessna 441 aircraft. Two NTSB investigators arrive on scene Sunday evening according to local officials and could be there until Wednesday. The investigators will examine the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating equipment as part of their investigation.

First responders faced difficulties accessing the crash site due to the dense woods. King Graves Road and Henn Hyde Road in Howland were closed Sunday but reopened to drivers Monday. Three houses near the woods where the wreckage sits remain tapped off with police patrolling the area for security.

Pace reported that no firefighters were injured. The Trumbull County Coroner was called to the scene.

Trumbull County Emergency Management Director John Hickey said a hazmat team and drone team from Trumbull County Emergency Management were on site.

i mean, it’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of their program, is it?
