They made a big deal at work over giving some guy a "challenge coin" recently, but I'm still not clear on what it's all about. Something about veterans? In any event, I think it's stupid.

I think they were those big coins with Yoshi's head on them from Super Mario World.

It's from the military. When a soldier does something really exceptional, he gets a "coin" from his commander as recognition of his accomplishment. Would be fascinating to know what these proles are getting coins for.

majority of coins in circulation are given for spending time in the orbit of a big wig or for attending to routine shit, not not so much exceptional accomplishments. can't speak for the Navy but for the Army and USAF most companies/squadrons pass unit coins out for doing nothing more than wearing their patch. you get a unit coin for graduating basic lmao.

you're supposed to keep one on you in social places, if you can't produce a coin at a bar when challenged you're going to buy the round. every unit with a bar has their own gay house rules and traditions.

Cr. Or they used to signify a connection you had with another group on a deployment etc. Now they just hand them out for showing up to a big meeting. I give them to my kids.
