I’m not saying the US is better than Europe. It’s generally not—certainly not in big cities or in terms of lifestyle for the average person, all things considered. But American proles have probably a 50% more “expensive” lifestyle than equivalent Euros. Two people who work at a big box store in Europe aren’t living in a 2k square foot home with two cars and every appliance they could dream of. That is achievable in non-costal US cities. |

But people in the US can choose between high COL living with access to public transportation or low COL living where they will need a car but have access to washers, dryers, AC etc. Many choose the latter and that choice is less available in Europe.
IMO, what Europe really excels at is making a middling white collar urban lifestyle OK. That’s why so many 105 IQ soccer fans romanticize it. It’s hard to believe, but being rural and poor in Europe may suck even more than in the US. |
