Not metaphorically. Not some dumb “inner truth” horseshit.
I just brushed my teeth. Wiped the steam off. Glanced up.
It was “Me.”
But…
Not the “Me” I remember looking like. Not the “Me” with luscious hair. Not the “Me” that could climb K-2 like a cakewalk.
Hairline too high. Cheekbones unfamiliar. Nose tilted left—like someone copied it from memory.
“He” looked older. Sadder. But not in the way “I” feel—more like how Evan looks when “he” thinks no one’s watching.
And here’s the part “I” haven’t told anyone yet:
“He” smiled. “I” didn’t.
Just a little twitch at the corner of “his” mouth. Like “he” knew something.
“I” backed away. Sat down on the edge of the tub.
The toothbrush kept humming.
And all “I” could think was:
“When did I stop being the original?”
