it wasn't "highly rated." such a lie. it had a small number of viewers and the median age of those viewers was 68. advertisers don't pay much for shitty audiences.
on top of weak ratings, it had a massively bloated production cost and was losing something like $40 million per year.

lol, CBS put out a statement confirming what had been reported: Colbert lost $40m per year. CBS says replacing him is a $55m/year swing.
