Just watch Platoon. Vietnam war films "get it" better than the WW2 wank ime. I enjoy Saving Private Ryan but it's like a 3 hour segue into ??? on rewatches whereas something like FMJ or Platoon or The Deer Hunter satiates in a way that Fury etc does not. |

You know what's a good tank film? U-571. The potpourri choice could be perhaps Cabin in the Woods or a more likely choice would be Cube. Cube was an excellent tank film ime. There are better tank games than tank films iirc; the medium is far more tactile. The tank experience is about a mixture of sensory deprivation and the fundamental separation between input and output, married over into consequences both dire and carnal. The insouciance in which the protagonist goes about playing with the devconsole in WarGames makes for a phenomenal bit of tank film afaik. |

Date: June 15th, 2026 5:29 AM Author: senhor rouba mas fes Fury was a film about Brad Pitt and his camaraderie with his soldati as they went from victory from victory until the myth of Wehrmacht technical superiority blows a 105mm hole in their Milwaukee beer keg steel. What does this topic have to do with the tank? With the mechanical crab, lurching in a deep discomfort from Hades to harrow the enlisted regimental slave? The impossible metal carcass, the god-besot? Very little. The ideal tank film: They're constantly sweating. Sweat everywhere. Has to be extremely uncomfortable. You need a Kubrick type director really willing to get into the business of making his actors suffer to make this work. Platoon did a wonderful job of capturing this, the sweat, the disgusting stink of war. You should be able to smell the shit on their trouser hems from behind the lens. That shit-smell should be all-consuming within the piece. There should not be a scene without the smell of shit and sweat and dysentery and the gut wretching in fundamentally unnatural pains as you watch. The camera angles? Claustrophobic, choking, you can barely breathe as you see the sickening motion. It's bewildering. It's difficult to watch; impossible to follow beyond the shouts of hate and victory and whatever else goes into the press of the fight. You need to leave the theater and vomit as the camera lurches into action. It's slow, grinding, plodding. Horrid and an old sailor's delight. The people? Ugly. Brad Pitt? Quite a nice looking man. Not my type but he is objectively appealing to many. This is a man who dies to the visual glory and bloody riot of a bayonet charge or perhaps a impartial but decisive machine gun nest, coughing and sputtering on his misplaced patriotism all the while. The tankmen must be harrowed and scurried away from the visual delight and favor of the eye. They must be ugly. They must be dirty. They must be bloody. An ideal tank film as a tank film has not been made yet. Gallipolli; a group of raucous Australians meets the terrible and hateful face of God driving a sheet metal 7-to--a-tube Weltkrieg leviathan into the turkish lines. This would satisfy. It has not been done. |
