Within a group you can specialize in roles that enable group survival. Depressed guy has a role to play even if he does not gather as much food or father as many children. He still passes on genes either by randomly fathering the occasional kid or helping the group that includes less depressed relatives who still carry some of the same genes (either recessive or expressed differently based on mix or experience). Also playing that role keeps depression in check so you are realistic guy who shoots down bad ideas and doesn’t waste energy on fruitless tasks and get overexcited about everything, not suicidal guy who stays in bed all day (no one would feed or protect that guy and he’d be dead in a month).

Modernity has systematically severed group ties and enabled a bunch of maladaptive spiraling behavior while preserving a safety net so depressed people don’t rapidly starve.
