And most of them are trash. You'll put "Must be licensed to practice law in New York" and get thousands of resumes from Indians whose only credential is a coding bootcamp. Yeah, let me get started on that H-1B paperwork for you, pajeet. It's easy to mock HR for using software or AI to sort through the applications, but I understand why some companies do that. For now my company is holding the line on human review, but this still involves somebody going through them very quickly to throw out the obvious losers.

Employment law is a big part of what got us to this point. Companies, fearing legal liability, will only confirm dates of employment and title, because if they say the guy sucks it's a lawsuit (especially if the guy is a minority). Somebody who's a known quantity and can vouch for somebody is a lot more reliable source of information. And I've vetoed somebody myself when I used to work with them at a prior place and know they suck. I don't like this networking bullshit either, but shitlibs did this.

100% on shitlibs. It’s natural and reasonable to hire people you trust. What else are you supposed to do when half of the applicant pool puts down their brother, cousin or whoever as their boss at Acme Corp. and they all know exactly what questions the new company is allowed to ask? There are even companies that will take your background check for you and pretend to be whoever you ask them to be. How the fuck is this at all meritocratic at this point? It’s a totally broken system and I’m hiring someone who has been vouched for by someone I know every single time. Shitlibs can call that whatever they want.
