Was it on tv too much in the 90s? Seems like this would be guaranteed to make $1B+ especially over all the other 80s crap they’ve remade

Because it’s perfect. I was watching Hunt for Red October the other day and thinking they could never remake this. It’s too good.

it's a perfect movie but this isn't why. bob gale is the producer and it's his baby and he would never allow a remake.

Though it has a great script, I think the actors are what made that movie. Is there anyone in Hollywood now that can be as charismatic as MJF or anyone who can do the Christopher Lloyd role? Maybe if they tried something very different it could work, but then you would need actual talent in the writers room.

MJF had a cultural juggernaut moment that "you had to be there for", etc.

Family Ties, B2F, Teen Wolf were all peaking at the exact same time and he was white hot.

Didnt last long, but it happened.

Don't forget The Secret of My Success. It's a time capsule in a ton of ways because it depicts a NYC with a lot more crime and focuses on rising to the top by starting in the mailroom and doing some light fraud. If it was remade today it'd be some IT guy reading all the top secret emails or some shit.

Cocktail, believe it or not, is a good example of this genre as well. Bro gets out of the army, moves to MFH, can’t get an office job, starts tending bar and getting laid. Surprised there aren’t more movies like this.

They would just be recast as black/brown gays/tgirls and you’d be shamed as a bigot if you didn’t think the new versions were better.

Robert Zemeckis had it in his contract that he has veto power over any remakes. Basically, they will remake it over his dead body.

"While there have been a Back to the Future animated show and comic book series, it’s unlikely Back to the Future will be getting a movie remake at any point in the near future. Director Robert Zemeckis has been very clear on that front and he, along with co-writer Bob Gale, have the final say on anything related to Back to the Future. In a 2015 interview, Zemeckis stated that a reboot “can’t happen unless both Bob and I are dead,” and he’s stood by that. So unless their estates cannot block it from happening after Gale and Zemeckis have passed, a Back to the Future remake isn’t in the cards."

Those dudes are both 72. They'll both be DEAD and to the extent the veto power is inheritable, you know their heirs will sell out for $$$$$.

They could do a snarky “everything was racistsexisthomophobic in the 80s” type film, with Colbert/John Oliver type “humor.” That would have gotten made a few years ago, no doubt in my mind.

Lots of NOT OK 80s stuff in the movie

Random Arab terrorists as bad guys

Marty is responsible for Chuck Berry

Biff being forceful with Marty’s mom (today this would be viewed as a 100% NOT OK rape, back then it was kind of just shrugged off)

Only Black guys in the movie smoke weed

Etc.

If the movie were made today, White teenagers would frame the Black guys for smoking weed, Black dudes would go to jail for infinity years, Marty’s mom would happily submit to tall chad Biff while his dad would go to prison for attempted rape by deception, Libyans would be Palestinians now and Marty would purposely not tell Doc about the assassination because Doc is Jewish and therefore oppressor.

A remake would be bigger than Top Gun Maverick. They don't even need the legacy cast because the brand is so popular.
