In-house counsel
Make about 300k a year
Have 1.6m options at current valuation but who knows if that ever realizes
Legal department is a shit show. Weak and ineffective boss. Exec team is in shambles with just tons of political infighting. Revenue is flat. Everything is dysfunctional and it’s infuriating trying while everyone seems checked out.
The equity is tying me down hard and job market seems like shit. What can I do? Almost every day by end of day I just want to burn the place down and get drunk just to cope with rage from all the idiocy

sex with men, for money
in all seriousness, i would start interviewing and leave if something gets you excited. life is short. and if you don't have a current timetable for exit, and especially if revenue is flat (red flag), who the hell knows what'll happen with those options

Job market sucks. Been trying to leave my GC gig for like 7 months now and have had only one good lead. A former co-worker just reached out about a GC job his company needs to fill, so maybe my luck is about to change
For context, my company sucks worse than yours and my commercial leaders are destroying us

Market’s very soft at in-house departments. I see people moving around for specialist roles, but not a lot with your sort of generalist skillset. Dealmaking is particularly weak.
But in ordinary times your skills are the more in demand end of the legal spectrum. Ride it out while looking for something with much stronger comp in the meantime? Geography changes are a PITA, so don’t be rash.

Sounds like you want to leave in which case it can't hurt to start looking. You also know the market is crap right now, but that doesn't change the strategy of "look until you get an offer that makes it worth jumping ship for."
If it were me, this doesn't sound terrible. There's always in-fighting in-house and I'm not a workaholic. Working remote is one of the most important things for me. Sounds like you're doing the work you want to do anyway so it isn't like you're relegated to shitty work that isn't interesting. So one thing you'll want to think about is what you really want. Is it more money? Is it more senior title/role?
