My job is relatively safe on my current project -- bringing in consistent revenue with a client that's very likely to continue working with us for at least two more years.

There's an opportunity for me to get "promoted" to a middle management role on a completely different project. Today I got an overview of what work has been done so far, and what's planned for the next year.

Not going to go into details, but this project is a pipe dream that'll never work without overhauling a large chunk of the client's organization, and that's not going to happen. My guess is there's a high likelihood of this project being cut, and me losing my job if I move to this project.

I've "informally" accepted the promotion by saying I'm interested, but after today's meeting I'd rather stay where I am where things are much more stable. How do I get out of this BS "promotion" to a death march project that's basically guaranteed to fail? I can't outright tell my manager it's a death march. JFC.

I don't think I can be that honest. If I was honest, I'd tell my boss this:

"Whoever planned this project severely underestimated its complexity and the resources required to deliver it. You need the client's senior leadership to make a drastic organizational change for this project to succeed, but this is being treated as a minor effort without any indication that senior leadership is even aware of this work. If/when someone competent finds out what this project is trying to accomplish, they'll know it's impossible and likely kill the contract."

ChatGPT gave me generic AI slop that is not nuanced enough even after I gave it a bunch of context.
