My job is relatively safe on my current project -- bringing in consistent revenue with a client that's very likely to continue working with us for at least two more years.
There's an opportunity for me to get "promoted" to a middle management role on a completely different project. Today I got an overview of what work has been done so far, and what's planned for the next year.
Not going to go into details, but this project is a pipe dream that'll never work without overhauling a large chunk of the client's organization, and that's not going to happen. My guess is there's a high likelihood of this project being cut, and me losing my job if I move to this project.
I've "informally" accepted the promotion by saying I'm interested, but after today's meeting I'd rather stay where I am where things are much more stable. How do I get out of this BS "promotion" to a death march project that's basically guaranteed to fail? I can't outright tell my manager it's a death march. JFC.
