What's kooky is that Bon Iver had exactly one really successful record, his first, and it was largely based off the success of exactly one radio single, a song called Skinny Love which Millennial women really liked because they thought it was about the idea that if they got skinny people would love them.
His entire career was a forcememe after that. He never wrote another hit or had a successful record again. His vocals were "just a vibe" and his stuff would play in the background and you would recognize his distinctive voice but nobody could actually name one other song he wrote.
Sufjan was the same except he never had any hits to begin with.

I do believe that the kings of the "hey ho" genre are Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers.
The Lumineer's biggest hit is literally called "Ho Hey" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6UqE6JzNLA
There was a time when all of my "cool fratty" friends all pretended to like this shit, and I think because of their wives liked it or something. Especially Mumford and Sons. I never liked their shit at all.

All the best music by any musician is made before they were famous and people cared. Everything changes when you start getting money to buy houses and cars from this shit.
Like what's better, "Dookie" when they were just a trio from NorCal no one had ever heard of or when they were mid career live at the Grammy's making political speeches?
And yes a lot of famous guitarists were turbo introverts. Page famously would tell his manager to go up to girls and tell them Jimmy thought they were cute because he was extremely shy.
Unfortunately for my schoolmate he didn't lay down anything of note before he converted to weird academic jazz/Mumford type. But yes he would have been better served just playing freely without caring what anyone thought.
All the best music is by people who were just winging it and following their creative instincts. Then everything gets gay after a while.

Virtually all music school professors are deeply into jazz. Think about it, if they had been God's gift at songwriting they'd be some famous musician. If they had the ability to write anthemic rock or pop riffs and melodies don't you think they would have done it instead of be some lowly paid academic?
A different friend of mine who went to music school used to tell me that jazz was the most important genre because it was the only genre you had to study formally in order to appreciate it.
Now I'm not saying everything ought to sound like Sabrina Carpenter and be created by a large corporation whose job it is to come up with music for people while they're shopping at Ross. But a genre so sophisticated you have to study in in order to like of seems a bit much.
This goes back to one of the classic arguments about art dating back millenia. It's the reason why chess is so popular. So sophisticated you can lose yourself in it forever, yet so simple you can teach it to a child. Now imagine playing Miles Davis for a kid and them not being like wtf is this retarded bullshit. There's a balance, and jazz heads are way too up themselves. It's ultimately cope for people with no intrinsic musical talent to make something with greater appeal. Music is an art form that is almost entirely if not completely meant to be enjoyable. If you're not creating emotions that connect with an audience what are you doing?

IMO (and also JS Bach), you can make music to glorify God. Or to sort of work out some things in your head. so i'm open to sort of insular, niche music. but i can't say i fully understand it in the case of the deep jazzheads

OP stipulated indie/folk which is more acoustic instruments - Fleet Foxes, band of Horses, Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, Bonnie Prince Billy, Damien Rice
to be distinguished with
indie rock proper like The National, Wilco, Bon Iver, Phoenix, M83, Arctic Monkeys, Frightened Rabbit, Grizzly bear, dirty Projectors, vaccines, broken social scene, the kills
