Is this a fucking joke? How fragile is our economy, that whether people buy new phones or not determines its success

"The average American now holds onto their smartphone for 29 months,"

LMFAO that's still way too consoomeristic. I cannot fathom changing phones any more frequently than 3 years. I'm shooting for 5 years on my current phone. I'd probably go even longer if I were an iPhone user, Apple tends to provide security updates for longer than Android OEMs

It’s really pointless to upgrade frequently given the typical new features anymore.

There are no new features. It’s just better camera and incremental processor upgrade. The IPhone 17 does the same shit as an IPhone 10

The only excuse I can think of for the figure being that low is that it is inclusive of situations where people replace phones due to unforseen circumstances - phones that get lost, stolen, broken, malfunction

The figure still feels way too low, there have got to be an absurd number of people that gets new phones every 2 years just because they want to

hilarious article

'While squeezing as much life out of your device as possible may save money in the short run, especially amid widespread fears about the strength of the consumer and job market, it might cost the economy in the long run, especially when device hoarding occurs at the level of corporations."

Libs truly are sick what happened to "e-waste" and what's best for the environment?

I am trying to imagine talking to a GE executive in 1980, "Sir, people are only holding their phones for 15 years," then getting laughed the fuck out of the building.

I've read up on the Bruderhof recently. They are sort of like communist Amish (commie Amis?).

They don't completely shun technology like the Amish. They don't really use it at home but they use it at work.
