A man accused of faking injury and lodging a fraudulent compensation claim after the Bondi Beach terror attack is being held in Sydney immigration detention and is facing deportation from the country.
Detectives from NSW Police’s homicide squad on Tuesday morning charged 46-year-old Simexwell Cyril, an Indian national, with publishing false and misleading material while attempting to secure tens of thousands of dollars under a state government support scheme.

Police allege Cyril falsely claimed he was hit by shrapnel during the December 14 attack in which father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more.
Cyril was also charged with making a false representation resulting in police investigation. Detectives allege he was not in Bondi at the time of the attack.
Victims hit by gunfire or shrapnel in the attack are eligible for a $35,000 lump sum payment under a NSW government support scheme open to applications until December 2027.
Australian Border Force officials detained Cyril, whose visa has expired, shortly after his arrest on Tuesday and transported him to Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney’s west. He is expected to be held in detention until the completion of criminal proceedings against him, after which he faces deportation.
Sajid Akram, 50, was killed in a shootout with police during the attack, the worst terror incident in Australian history. Naveed Akram, now 25, survived gunshot wounds and remains in custody.

Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday heard that 78 charges against Naveed Akram, including 15 counts of murder and dozens of counts of attempted murder, were expected to be certified in late February.

Counter-terrorism investigators have taken 1500 witness statements from alleged victims and first responders and seized seven electronic devices belonging to the Akrams, the court heard. Investigators have analysed the financial position of the father and son, and their purchases in the lead-up to the attack.
The scale of the investigation undertaken by officers from the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team into the Bondi attack was unprecedented, prosecutors said. Applying for an extension of time to certify charges against Akram, prosecutors said they would review all relevant material to ensure that “no relevant person’s narrative is left untold”.
Cyril was granted conditional police bail on Tuesday, and is expected to face court from detention on November 18.
Akram will return to court on February 24.
