Like even stupider than they are now, if you can believe it. Sure, it is nice that we can potentially offload tedious mental processes to an AI chip or NPU, but what does that ultimately mean for "us". More time to preen and twerk on TikTok I guess. More time to scroll through lurid digital images and get our rocks off. Idk I don't even care tbh. Discuss.

let's start with this:

how are we going to justify 90% of secondary education when computer does it all for them?

never mind justifying it, it won't even be viable to try and teach a bunch of kids these things when they have instant access to a device at all times.

right, the only real option is to ban phones in school, but the ones that have tried got mobbed by the parents, "what if there's a shooting and i need to reach my child?!?!"

and apparently they are completely awful. teaching and professor forums are full of nightmare situations with kids who can't and don't do anything and the system that won't hold them accountable at all. once AI comes along, why even pretend? just let them stay home and send them a UBI check with the "education" funding.

i pretty much agree, but there used to be a veneer of "you'll need these skills to survive after school," but with AI it's just obliterated. it's smarter than a lot of them could ever be.

the mask came off with covid but honestly even before that it was gamed to death too many people doing effectively the same bullshit their parents and parents parents did with constant coaching and nudging

everyone is rich and their purpose is to be docile and enjoy things

You could say this about all tech. Starting way back, the plow made us stupider in that nobody really knows how to break up soil by hand anymore. A more recent example is spellcheck erasing peoples' spelling skills. Your observation is correct: the more we let tech do, the less we do ourselves. The less we ro ourselves, the less we get good at things. But this has been happening since man used rock. That's why i tell anti AI people to join the Amish. I don't believe AI is going to be the thing to reduce us to absolute retards. I think we'll adapt in some fashion

I think the idea is that the more advanced tech gets, the higher on the IQ scale that point of economic relevance moves. With each generation you need to be higher IQ than in the previous in order to contribute in a non-obsolete, non-automated way. It's a quantitative difference in terms of how many people pass the threshold each generation, but with a declining population IQ and a rising relevance-IQ we are at a point where like 97% will literally have nothing to contribute, and 3% is just not enough for the others to hitch a ride on anymore.

We can find more elegant ways to express it as you have. But the question remains, what's next? Robots serving humans a la The Jetsons? Or humans are hooked into AI and farmed for resources a la The Matrix? Is it one before the other? Is the latter inevitable or the former attainable?

Maybe there's a corollary to the Luddite fallacy. People can identify all the jobs technology will eliminate but not the new jobs it will create

There will probably be all sorts of new applications for critical thinking. Especially if ai eliminates all the mind numbing rote stuff that wastes tons of time

I do wonder about the impact of ai on sexual selection and long run evolutionary impact tho.

Proponents of using calculators in the classroom believed that the time saved would free students from rote arithmetic allowing them to develop more advanced math skills.

There was a study that showed that the introduction of calculators into the classroom resulted in lowered mathematical ability

i don't think you can develop critical thinking without years of mind numbing rote stuff. you need to learn how to think about the simple stuff first. walk before you run. but no one is going to bother now that AI does it.

and how many critical thinkers do we really need?

Like every other major technological advancement of the past century, it will not lead to any meaningful increase in leisure time. Just more race to the bottom.
