Engines are already fully computer controlled. At the end of the day there are not fewer mechanical parts; just the same as ever plus the electronic controls and sensors. To say nothing of the rest of the vehicle.

Take agricultural equipment. Do you know how mechanically sophisticated a tractors drive system is? I took a course on it and literally could not grasp it fully. And I may be retarded (I am) but I did score flying colors on Komatsu Forklift training program for engines, hydraulics, transmissions and electronics.

I have quite a bit of experience with tractors, but they are literally going to be robots that you have to send to the dealership just to take a bolt off of in the next few years, good fucking luck making money trying to break open one of those transmissions as it sits now, I had to travel a hundred miles to even find a guy who could rebuild a 50 year old 4020 fuel pump and shit is only getting worse

Ironically fuel pumps are literally the only thing that have truly gotten simpler

No more unit injectors actuated by oil pressure, no more rotary pumps or inline pumps with 500 parts. Just two plungers inside their cylinders. Common rail injection. Can be rebuilt by a regular dealership tech without sending off to an injection shop. All that happens when they break is the plunger cracks in half. You pull the head off and remove the plunger to find it is separated into an upper half and a lower half. If it hasn't splintered up then you replace the plungers and done

True. Not gonna be too many indies left unless this right-to-repair legislation movement gains traction. I haven't really been following it much, is it going anywhere?

Also wouldn't they be just like hospitalist doctors at that point? Work for a company but still highly compensated.

the machine that does codes will need to be read and you can have all the rights you want but at some point you need your machine to work and aren't going to drop 10k on another fucking machine to just do that, tractors are already more complicated than cars and it will get worse, the future is clearly automated machinery and incredible complexity

This is not the case anymore. For $30 you're maybe doing tires, lube and brakes. What Penske and Ryder call a Level 1 Technician (scale goes up to 4).

Start with those old gm information commercials on YouTube. I think they're from the late 40s. Fascinating and really well thought out. My boys watched them.

Get him an old engine from the scrapyard for a hundred bucks and disassemble/reassemble it with him. Help him understand what each part does and see if he connects the dots himself on how an internal combustion engine works. Help him identify what parts need to be replaced and to replace all of the gaskets, spark plugs and other consumables. Incentivize him by giving him the profit from whatever you sell it for once it's nice and reconditioned. Obviously make sure the engine block itself isn't cracked or warped or otherwise fucked up beyond the white man's ability to repair before you buy it.

Good one.

We have already disassembled (but not reassembled) a 7hp Kohler engine.

Currently we are working on a to-scale V8 engine (about 8"x5"x5").

I did recently but a military surplus 2-cylinder air cooled diesel engine for us to tear down and rebuild, but I have nowhere to do it with him.

180.

Don't you have a yard you could haul it out into if your garage isn't big enough?

I live in a vehicle

We did the Kohler in a coffee shop. (I was able to get away with that since it had never been run so was whistle clean. It was previously used in a high school shop class to teach engine assembly only)

Exactly what we've been doing.

Obv this model V8 has some excessive tolerances.

So I'm pulling the crankshaft back and forth to show him what end-play is.

Then went up to the heads and did the same with a camshaft. I ask, "what's that called?" He goes: "Camshaft end-play!"
