Boomer at my gym told me he hired one to manage a small part of his portfolio (like 50k), but then he just copies whatever his advisor does in that smaller account on his own in his normal brokerage account to get good tips without paying the ridiculous AUM fee.
So they're net positive if you're sufficiently high IQ/scummy.
