If you haven't read up on the NYC/LA confrontation it is wild - they hated each other and this is the root of the whole west / east stuff you hear in the next generations. NYC was more militant black nationalist— think black leather panthers parading around with guns and seeking unity with internal movements, communism. Very political. Oakland was more America focused, running around in dashikis. The dashiki thing was actually a big deal. NYC told Oakland they could not wear them. That if they were going to be part of the party they fell under their control. Cleaver spent time in North Korea and eventually Algeria where he established an embassy for the Black Panther party sanction by the government and where he tried to run the Black Panther party in the US. At one point he and Newton were casting each other out of the party on nationally syndicated radio. Complete shitshow and lead to the end of the party. Pretty much a success of the CIA.
