So many bangers. Black Holes and Revelations 10/10 record front to back. Only 1-2 weak songs mostly all bangers. Nothing *wrong* with being whatever age you are. I would have to google 70s bands, or would write things like "Yeah I know one T. Rex song". But Janes Addiction is emblematic because they spearheaded the Gen-X "alternative" moment for a few years, not least through Lollapalooza drawing connecting points between shoegazers, greasy haired grungers, rappers, etc etc. Not to mention birthing other momentous things like Lilith Fair, assorted hippie festivals, re-booting Woodstock, etc. I wouldnt begrudge anyone hating Janes, even tho I like 3 of their albums a lot. But they must be confronted one way or another if youre writing about 90s alternative rock. He was one of the most creative people who ever lived. He didn't just write songs he created a whole universe. He didn't just make art he lived it. I don't think he ever wrote a single song in a major key. He may have written the most negative hits of anyone in history. His entire discography is a downer and I don't think people bring that up enough. It's extremely unusual to almost never write a song in a major key and I can't think of another artist who did. In Bloom is almost in a major key but it's not, really. Kurt had the most negative energy of any star ever. And he wrote so many hits it's insane. Almost all of his songs are famous classics. What more can be said about him? He was a very weird guy and his death launched him to another level of infamy. He wasn't playing the same game as the rest of humanity. Pixies were great they were the first band to write pop songs with a grunge theme. They will always be the first movers in grunge pop. But in the long run they weren't incredible songwriters. They should be in the rock hall of fame and it's stupid that they're not. Pearl Jam is one of the greatest bands ever to write almost entirely in 1 4 5 progressions. Nearly all of their songs recycle the same chords over and over again. They were brilliant tunesmiths and deserve a lot of credit. But they also took the grunge sound and turned it into really cheesy pop music. They are sort of like The Eagles or something. I personally can listen to it but would often prefer not to.
