The North bred Tall men because they had to. Not because of oats or fjords or clean air. But because men died with axes in their hands and only the tall ones lived long enough to rut. It was that simple. A man with long limbs swings wider. His reach is death. His sons inherit that reach. And so it went.
The Norse were few. Small tribes. Isolated by ice and salt. No room for weakness. No mercy for the short. The long-legged spearmen broke skulls and bred daughters who bore more long-legged men. It was biology under the sword. Natural selection in wet leather and iron rings.
And further east and south where Turds reside, in the crush of heat and Caste, the war never came. Not like that. Not hand-to-hand and face-to-face. There was structure. There was tradition. But not war. Not the kind that winnows men. And so the gene pool was allowed to settle like warm water; varied, intricate, with multivariate Castes, but not brutal. Not sharpened.
In the land of elephants, survival came through cunning, not through cleaving. Through cleverness, not crushing. And so their best minds thrived, not their tallest shoulders. Not their thick wrists. There was no bottleneck of violence to burn away the Short.
History is written in bones imo. In silhouettes on old shields. Tall men, born of war. Small men, born of peace.

DIE BENCHOD
The average height of a US soldier in World War II was approximately 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm). They also typically weighed around 144 pounds. During basic training, soldiers would often gain 5-20 pounds and an inch on their chest size.
While 5'8" was the average, there was variation. For example, the average Japanese soldier during WWII was around 5'3 1/2".

The Viking Age lasted from approximately 800 to 1066. So far, we know that height can be greatly influenced by living conditions, and that the majority of European growth took place post industrialisation.
Therefore, we can safely assume that Viking Age Scandinavians were shorter than modern-day Scandinavians.
The Age of Vikings by Professor Anders Winroth gives the measurements of skeletons from a Viking Age grave field in Fjälkinge, Sweden as 160-185cm for men and 151-171cm for women.
This is in line with Viking Age skeletons found in Denmark, which had an estimated average height of 171cm for men and 158cm for women.

"Tamquam ex virtutibus, haec quoque nationis candor honestusque."
"As if these too were among the virtues, the Germans are Tall, have fierce blue eyes, reddish hair, and large bodies fit only for sudden exertion."
— Germania, Chapter 4
"Corporis tantum robore gaudent: magna corpora et tantum ad impetum valida."
"They exult only in physical strength: large bodies, powerful only for attack."
— Germania, Chapter 4 (alternate phrasing)
