Howard Lincoln getting GRILLED on having "no games" like 3 months after releasing the greatest game of all time hitherto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj8Khw3e-e4
....how long did it take for PS2 and PS3 to have, "games," and no one ever criticised them iirc.

-N64 and Dreamcast launched strong af because irl gamers were like, "wow just wow, so many Good Games, I will get this console"
-Conversely, PS1/PS2 launched with No Games, Sony making backroom deals to monopolise third party support and FUCK the competition, normies shrug and get PS2s. PS1 launched weak af, nobody cared, but nobody was like, "no gameS!!!!"
Microsoft sees that this is fraud, competes, loses interest.

N64 sold less than Saturn in Japan
PS1 outsold N64 by 3x
Everyone pisses on N64 and pities Dreamcast

There is a reason that Nintendo fans are so much more passionate that it's all but the origin of the millenial/soy meme - https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1330803-soy-boy-face-soyjak - they are passionate af about their precious video games, while PS1 owners each owned 50 games that they played for 12 minutes each.
The point of OP is that from a business perspective, Nintendo found themselves on the defensive right from the beginning. Despite being the entrenched player in the market, it was as though they immediately became Sony's bitch after a 3-month honeymoon period. Every 3rd party developer and every gaming magazine lined up behind Sony. Then came the low blows like this - https://img.cinemablend.com/filter:scale/cb/e/7/8/9/3/9/e78939b5b72c5b60a62abb27564239e696aee54830911a0fef03539f42a6e495.jpg?fw=1200
Maybe I underestimated the demand for middling, cheap games. Like were people so ecstatic to have Tomb Raider for $40 instead of Turok for $60, I don't get it. I thought both consoles' libraries were admittedly top-heavy af but people have always asserted that the PS1 had this bottomless library of games. Each console has basically 10 good games before you get to the point that you're either dumpster-diving, or that you're an aficionado for a particular genre.
N64 - Super mario 64, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros, Banjo, Zelda, Zelda, Star Wars Rogue Squadron/SOTE/Racer, Wave Race. There's a dropoff in quality after this point but it isn't steep imo, still have the wrestling games, 1080, Turok, F-zero, Hybrid Heaven, Paper Mario.
PS1 - FF7/FF9, MGS, FF8 (sucks imo), a bunch more JPRGs, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Symphony of the night, then what the fuck else? I know it had Mega Man, Street Fighter, but did anyone care? They sold 100 million PS1s but no game sold nearly that amount, I suspect that that number is a lie of some sort or that people bought the console in 3rd world countries to play CDs or something.

This is cr. I have batocera Linux running on a modern AMD 6-core desktop. I can emulate everything from Atari 2600 to PS3 flawlessly. I have over 16k game ROMs, including thousands of MAME, SNK/Neo-Geo, PSP and even MSDOS and Amiga ROMs. I've got every PS1 and PS2 ROM.
The systems I find myself playing most often are N64, SNES, Gamecube and NES. Not because I have any fondness or nostalgia for Nintendo, but because the games fucking rule. I'm playing the old non-remastered Ocarina of Time and it's 180. I don't even need it to be remastered, it looks great upscaled on the Glide64 emulator.
My biggest addiction lately has been all the various Metroid hacks. There are a bunch of good ones for Super Metroid. I've played the shit out of Super Metroid lately. There's no other series like Metroid on any other platform. PERIOD.
I use a proper controller for all three systems. Don't play mario on an xbox controller. For original NES it's important to have a two button controller so you don't accidentally hit a nonfunctional button. HTH
