Not even the most underrated game on the Saturn. Nights was well thought of and majorly hyped and probably even a bit less good than it was hyped as. It's arguably overrated. And I say that as a HUGE saturnmo who had a lot riding on Nights being a killer app that might turn things around. So let's talk about REAL underrated Saturn games:
Virtua Fighter 2: yes this was highly rated, but it was hands down the BEST fighting game on any system for a very long time but wasn't really recognized as that. It was light years beyond its contemporaries like Tekken and Toshinden.
Guardian Heroes: another well-received game, but it's arguably still *the best* of its type even today, yet rarely shows up on GOAT lists. The only other game I could make a case for is dragon's crown, which came multiple generations later, and it isn't even a clear case
Astal: this never shows up on any lists but it's a beautiful game
Wing Arms: this flight combat game was just pure fun and I'm surprised it's so obscure
Darius gaiden: a shmup masterpiece
Mystaria-Realms of Lore: I remember being so hyped for this game that I ordered it from one of those sketchy ads with price lists in the back of gaming mags. I didn't really know how "release dates" worked at the time and that ordering it wouldn't get me the game quicker, but surprisingly I did get it. I had the OG mystaria, not the blazing heroes reprint. It was an above average srpg that never gets talked about and might have been the first decent 3d srpg with adjustable cameras.
Worldwide Soccer 2: never see this on "best of lists." The first one with sprite-based players was an extremely fun arcade-style soccer game but the second one went all poly and really upped the ball handling model. It was far superior to any other soccer game at the time.
