So to recap from the beginning, it all started with Something Awful which apparently was some kind of unsuccessful rival to 4chan. Gun to the head I couldn't begin to tell you what this was other than that it developed out of previous obscure internet communities. But anyway people posted memes and shit for the lulz I guess. It seems like a whackier version of 4chan with more of its own distinct subculture. It seemed like total geek/nerd territory just like hundreds of unfuckable coders and weirdos. The types who if they didn't find meaning on SA would just be 4chan shitposters.
The first schism was some of these people fancied themselves right wing intellectuals they made a site called The New Effort, and then Something Awful Sychophant Squad which they created to make fun of minorities on SA, their original home base, and to trolls the mods. Everything in the EA article says they have always been catty, vindictive, have a really high opinion of themselves, identify as intellectuals, and spend all their time online trolling others.
They also seem to have ties to PUA and MRA blogs and in the beginning were heavily into making comments about lowering the age of consent, ie they are all pedos. HTH |

There seems to be a pattern that as these venues increase in scale, they attract more misfits, angry kooks, and unintelligent free riders who simply parrot ideological dogma. Stormfront has a staggering number of forums and subforums, which promotes cliquish subgroups and further petrifies discussion. I envision MPC as more on the scale of a mailing list or magazine, and am wary of seeing it get too large. I think a healthy amount of turnover is necessary, and when you don't have that turnover you get entrenched, sprawling forums that lose their focus and cater to the lowest common denominator. My role here is partly editorial, to maintain scope and tone and some kind of intellectual standard.
