When she was 26, her much older father died (parents were divorced) and she and two older half brothers from a first marriage split the father's estate, each receiving a third of a million. She used 300k of her share to buy a SFH in the bay area for 800k (circa 2007). No way she would have been able to afford it otherwise. House is now worth a cool 2.5M due to appreciation. She's a nice woman and with a good career but she definitely benefited from an early inheritance. Lots of stories similar to hers with family help. And these stories are increasingly dividing people into winners and losers because America is cleaving into winners and losers, including entire metro areas versus others.

But in the last ten, especially five years, it's trickled down to prosperous middle classes launching their kids into the next generation of prosperous middle classes.
What I'm planning for my own kids - fully funded college/grad school and help with their first house - is now considered building multigenerational wealth whereas 20 years ago it'd just be seen as helping kids get started in life. |
