The only exception is if you are rich enough that you don't work.

I thought about adding an exception for parents who don't have sole custody, but ljl obviously you are a shitty parent if you lost your kids.

I also engage in these activities on my own or with my own (vanishingly few) friends. Took a boys trip to Western NC to mountain bike with two buddies about a year ago. Rode harder stuff than my kids would have been up for. Then sat around campfires and bullshitted about middle age life without the filters we’d have needed if the kids were around.

My hobby is timepieces. Sometimes, I will try them all on my wrist and switch between metal bracelets, nato straps, and leather rally straps. Lately, I’m loving my dive watches on the leather rally straps, no matter how gauche.

Kids? Fuck them kids.

Controversial opinion: The Rolex GMT II should be 42mm not 40mm. The Sea Dweller 43 feels much nicer on the wrist than a submariner.

Bigger watches is going to be a trend for Rolex going forward, and I'm not sure I love it. Counterpoint - the Explorer going from 36mm to 39mm was a step in the wrong direction and largely driven by the fact that the median customer is now disgustingly obese

Golfmo here. I agree it’s shitty and guilt inducing to spend massive chunks of your weekends away at the course. I do that maybe 5 or 6 times a year. That said I do play a lot of very early morning rounds that I can finish like before 10am. It gives me time with everyone and puts me in a better mood than if had just sat on my ass or done chores all morning. Rest of the time is hitting balls or getting in 9 during the workday while everyone is at school or bringing everyone out to the course in the afternoons.

This is fucking retarded and one of the dumbest and most vile aspects of modern western "parenting". You should live a life you wish your kids to emulate. Doing everything in service of your children and nothing else only communicates to your kids that they are the center of the universe and everyone else lives to serve them. It's the apex of the "children replacing religion" mind virus

It’s specifically a great way to have your kids not respect you and want to get as much distance at possible from you when they are adolescents/by about age 16 or so. If you have no social outlets and no interests or activities you do regardless of your kids being interested or benefiting you communicate to them that you have no identity other than what you get vicariously through them, which makes you a person they don’t want to emulate and makes them resent you, at least subconsciously, for failing to model a life as a working parent that isn’t full or well rounded. Every parent should have like 5 nights a month where they are not physically present for their kids after they are 5 or so, and 2-3 should be time away from spouse too.

It is absolutely vital to set an example for your kids that isn't just "serving them." I think for a lot of people, their careers basically plateau or flatline. So they basically cope by saying "I do it all for my kids" and make that their entire personality. To be fair, it could be a lot worse. But I agree that kids need to view you as being your own man.

I think it depends on how you work the hobby into your life.

With music and soccer, I only ever do these things after my kids are asleep. It's time I'd otherwise be spending lying on the couch scrolling through social media or watching sports.

They are both also things I do with my children.

If you're a working parent, when do you have time for hobbies? Between kids school drop offs, pick ups, work, groceries, cooking, and other chores there's really only time for basic exercise in the morning or after your kids are asleep. Or you stick your kids with the other parent which seems like a recipe for resentment and divorce eventually. I always see the golf courses packed with middle aged guys who I assume have kids vegging out in front of tablets at home or being shuttled around to sports by their moms.

yeah you're obviously not going to be as GOOD or as DEVOUT in the hobby as some DINK nerds who post on reddit in subreddit r/hobby. but to say you don't get to have any hobbies and now you just think about your kids 24/7/365 with zero breaks, that's just crazy. that's not how parenthood has been throughout human history and it's not necessary. yes, you need to ensure there's a stable home, with love, and needs met. but lol at this helicopter parenting shit
