I picked up and read What Does It All Mean? by Professor of Philosophy at NYU Thomas Nagel after Joshua Derrick suggested that I read him in a comment. It’s an introductory text to philosophy asking some basic problems of life: knowledge of the world beyond our minds, knowledge of minds other than our own, the relation between mind and brain, how language is possible, whether we have free will, the basis of morality, what inequalities are unjust, the nature of death, and the meaning of life.
Nagel’s writing style is down to earth and plain, and he is easily understandable. However, I struggled to get through the introductory text, just like I struggled to get through philosophy classes in college. The reason is that Nagel writes in an academic, quasi-detached tone, and I find this fundamentally boring. I want to read someone who has suffered in the knowledge he has gained, bled and shed tears over it; Nagel is too antiseptic, he has not been initiated through pain in the problems he discusses - and for that, the beating heart and soul of what would make the material interesting is missing to me.
