The Genesis -
Progress report - 1989 - Im going to play some games. Streets of Rage is fun because you beat people up. Mortel Combat haz blood. Im going to America to the Sega Technical Institute. They are gonna pay me many every month for lerning to make Americans violent. Im glad Im selling in America because all my frends and all the fun we have here.
32x -
Progress Report - 1994 - Tom Kalinske says I shud keep putting out beat-em-ups but I dont have to do it every day just when I think of something or something speshul happins. He says dont get discoridged because it takes time and it happins slow. He says it took a long time with Genesis before he got 2 times more bits then he was before. Thats why Genesis beats me all the time at sales. That makes me feel better. I coud probly do that amazed faster than a reglar Genesis without a 32x. Maybe some day III beat SNES. Boy that would be some· thing. So far SNES looks like it might win the gen.
Saturn -
Progress Report - 1995 - This day was good for me. Seeing the past more clearly, I have decided to use my knowledge and skills to work in the field of playing anime fighters and obscure Japanese titles. Who is better equipped for this work? Who else has lived in both worlds? These are my people. Let me use my gift to do something for them. Tomorrow, I will discuss with Tom Kalinske the manner in which I can work in this area. I may be able to help him work out the problems of dual processors. I have several good ideas of my own. There is so much that might be done with this technique. If I could be made into a console with both 2D and 3D powers, what about thousands of consoles like myself? What fantastic levels might be achieved by using this technique on normal consoles? On add-ons? There are so many doors to open. I am impatient to begin. The processing stimulus to which we were subjected results in an intensification and acceleration of all processes. The unforeseen development, which I have taken the liberty of calling the Saturn Effect, is the logical extension of the entire intellectual speed-up. The hypothesis here proven may be described simply in the following terms: Consoles with dual processors for 2D and 3D have their market position deteriorate at a rate of time directly proportional to the quantity of the increase. I feel that this, in itself, is an important discovery. As long as I am able to write, I will continue to record my thoughts in these progress reports. It is one of my few pleasures. However, by all indications, my own Console Sales deterioration will be very rapid.
Dreamcast -
Progress Report - 2000. Sammy called a strange banker to see me. he was afraid I was going to die. I told the banker I had lots of games and wasn't going to die and that I only had low sales sometimes. He asked me did I have any DVD-playing capabilities and I said no I don't have any. I told him I had a friend called Visual Concepts once but he was a Westerner and we used to make games together. He looked at me kind of funny like he thought I was crazy. He smiled when I told him I had a big successful launch. He talked to me like I was a baby and he winked at Sony. I got mad and chased him out because he was making fun of me the way they all used to.
Progress Report - 2001. Good-by Tom Kalinske and Yuji Naka and evreybody. And P.S. please tell Bill Gates not to be such a grouch when pepul 1aff at him and he woud have more frends. Its easy to make frends if you let pepul laff at you. 1m going to have lots of frends where I go. P.P.S. Please if you get a chanse put some flowrs on Sonic's grave in the bak yard ...

Here are the modded threads :
Topic N64 is bereft of intellectual content
Message There is all but nothing to "graduate" to after you've had your fill of 3D platformers and kart racers. Nothing but lurid, ghastly 3rd-party titles await he who dares to venture outside of the safety of the bubble of Nintendo 1st and 2nd party titles on the N64. I've got nothing against people who are into Duke Nukem, War Gods, or Mortal Kombat Mythologies, but whoa boy, these games aren't just ghastly. They're anti-intellectual, and are tailor-made for an intellectually incurious proletariat. I love the N64 for all its faults but I am so glad that Nintendo returned to form with the Gamecube. Full stop.
Topic The second halves of all N64 games are ALL weaker than the first
Message
Super Mario 64, as documented herein on the front page
Shadows of the Empire, as documented herein on the front page
Ocarina of Time is another example
Goldeneye is another imo
Pilotwings 64 for sure
Perfect Dark's later single-player games are meh imo
Donkey Kong 64 becomes a SLOG as it goes on
Basically all N64 games wear out their welcome imo. Discuss.
Topic Without Xenogears, I would've killed myself 200 times over by now
Message And for subtly different reasons each and every time. Initially, this game helped cement my atheism. Ironically, it was this atheism that helped me through some of the most trying times in life. For if I had thought God was, "a thing," at the time, I would've offed myself, no question, because no kind and loving god could allow the world to be in the shape that it's in. Later, after a particularly thoughtful playthrough, I came around to the idea that the story is actually one of hope, and of a triumph of the human spirit. That you are not killing but rather, in a way, making way for god's vision to enrapture the world. The Ethos, for all its corruption, was arguably a force for good in Solaris. Could its civilization have thrived without the moderating influence of the Ethos? Could Deus and Grahf and others have been held at bay for centuries without the power of prayer? And I keep coming back to the Zohar Modifier. Anyway, I've brought up two of my prevented suicide attempts, but there were literally scores more in between, and each time, a playthrogh of Xenogears stopped me. Sometimes there were two or more prevented suicide attempts within a single playthrough. No other game has been able to have this effect. Final Fantasy Tactics doesn't change my moral outlook. Coolboarders doesn't give me that joie de vivre that Xenogears does. Certainly, since anyone reading this is alive, that you will have had similar experiences. How the default human life trajectory doesn't end with suicide at age 12, I'll never know. Since I am Gen-X, I was actually like 20 when I played this game for the first time, but I had other things going on from 12-20 that distracted me from the will to end my life. Some of them I cannot get into. Others are off topic or beyond the scope of this post. But needless to say, I have had a rough go of it in life and Xenogears has given me hope that god's grace (or nonexistence, depending on my philosophy at the time) will avail itself to humanity and we will be delivered from our sins. Discuss.
sull56ivan2010 just slapped cowgod live during podcast oscars
Message This is startling imo. Many people are taking sides atm. Anyone catch the latest Podcast btw?
Topic PlayStation Intelligentsia
Message In my experience, in the Pacific Northwest back in the 90s, the PlayStation was huge with the intellectual class. Anyone from well-read internet posters (sometimes usenet newsgroups, sometimes gamefaqs itself), college professors, Boeing Engineers (back when the planes flew properly), Microsoft Engineers (back when Windows worked properly), seemingly all of these intellectuals preferred the PS1. At the time, I never quite understood why. I saw the PS1 as the console of Crash Bandicoot and Lara Croft. What would an intellectual want with it? But with time, the mysteries of the PlayStation were laid bare. Xenogears, FF Tactics, SaGa Frontier, Chrono Cross, and others came into being. Gran Turismo showed us what Engineering was all about. With time, the intellectual superiority of the PlayStation - and its fanbase - was all too obvious. Don't get me wrong, the Saturn was no slouch. You could say, as a matter of fact, that it owned the NiGHTs. But the day is long imo, and the day was won by PlayStation. N64, well.... don't get me started haha. Discuss.

This thread is a masterpiece. Show me anything at all on this board that even comes close to this level of intellectual and artistic rigor. Go ahead, I’ll wait. The emotional intelligence to even conceive of something like this is unprecedented here.
Not sure why you would want to “Ignore” TC. Hooray! You can now see one more banal SNES trivia thread. No offense, but I get the impression that there are a lot of, uhh, Genesis fans here who are left drooling, slack jawed and utterly non responsive when confronted with scholarship so reflective of the natural truths they have so tried to deny, like Medusa facing the mirror of Perseus. Well congratulations, this time you’ve killed Perseus and the and the Underworld is safe once again for you to wallow in your ignorance and ignominy.

Anyways, haha, back on topic — I am actually fascinated by this topic. Flame wars and personal vendettas aside, I've always been partial to the Genesis for the fact that it wasn't just a gaming system. It was so much more than that. It was the first console that wasn't really about the "games." The image, the coolness, the controller with only 3 buttons which is easier for less advanced children to use, much larger than the SNES controller and thus fit for bullys' large hands. I mean, name a Genesis game. You can't. Genesis was the setpiece of wild and crazy fucking mayhem that only cool kids were capable of generating. We'd play NHL '93 for like half a minute, fight in-game, and then go play Manhunt. We'd pop in X-men with Game Genie for a good 15 minutes before beating the shit out of each other. The Genesis' main draw was as a centerpiece to a lifestyle. It was never about the games (nor should it be, frankly). It's always been about the lifestyle. Like a police car outside the home of a domestic violence call, the Genesis was most conspicuous as it sat IDLE on so many entertainment stands, parents wondering where their children were, wondering why they couldn't be like that nice kid down the street who always played SNES whose parents limited his playtime. Genesis parents (those that were together) would only dream of seeing their children more. Who knows what manner of mayhem they were up to? Firecrackers, cherry bombs, bloody knuckles, other children beaten to a pulp, wheelies, 3-wheelers, pretty much whatever they wanted. It's this lifestyle that an outsider, like a scientist or something, would view as developmentally stunted, and liken to early-stage Charlie from Flowers for Algernon. They saw Genesis children as something that needed "fixing." That's how we ended up with so many children on adderall. That's how we ended up with Charlie's IQ/GPA skyrocketing, but for a time. And that's how we ended up with the Saturn.
The Genesis --> Saturn remains, to this day, the console gen with the fewest retained customers. Genesis customers didn't know what to make of the Saturn. And believe you me, the Japanese Engineers and Businessmen behind the Saturn did not know what to make of the American miscreants who played the Genesis. Believe me. Genesis fans who were fortunate enough to get Saturns were known to utterly waste the opportunity to experience the caliber of next-gen greatness that was truly revolutionary at the time. And Sega turned their nose up at their fans. They thought they were too good for them, too civilized, too intellectual. They didn't care about "sales" as much as they wanted to be a staple in Japan, the motherland of all bourgeoisie game consoles. It could be said that all content suitable for children of learning and privilege originates from Japan. Why shouldn't it be the same for consoles? Or for add-ons? Such was the Saturn's dilemma. And this really was the one, and only nail in Sega's coffin. Their failure to so much as understand their customers at the most rudimentary level spelled Ruination. They just never had a chance. It would be like if NASCAR switched to Initial-D drift races or something. It was that stark of a jump. The tone, the content, the focus on learning and critical thinking, it was just all wrong for the Genesis crowd. Not to mention the price point. We all know that '94 was a rough year with the election of a majority of Republicans to Congress, and fewer and fewer households would prove to be prosperous enough to own a slice of the good life in the form of a high-end game console. Many would-be buyers of the Saturn ($399 at launch) would migrate to the less-expensive N64 ($199 at launch). We all know what happened from there. Nintendo became inundated with more working-class children than they knew what to do with. They tried everything they could.
They assembled a "dream team" of western developers of ill repute to try to give these children what they craved. One could only imagine the sort of backroom dealings that Nintendo engaged in to get so many disreputable developers together. People don't understand this now, but they really were trying to capture the zeitgeist of the Genesis. Nintendo of America, like so many generals, was fighting Last Gen's war. They thought that the fighting in Wayne Gretzky's 3D hockey would draw in fans of NHL '93. They thought Duke Nukem and Turok would be Cool mascots for the console. And although these working class children took to the N64 in droves, it was never enough to surmount the console's flailing reputation. In essence, it was the Sega Genesis that did so much to upend Nintendo's dominant status. It was also the console that instilled Sega of Japan with such arrogance that they dared turn their nose up at their own audience. It was the Console that taught Sony how to play the game (hint: style on Nintendo, it's easy for some reason bc video games had such a losery reputation in the early 90s and really throughout the decade). And these are but some of the first-order effects of the Genesis. The second-order effects must be absolutely mind-blowing, if not catastrophic. Stuff like Columbine, or the Vegas shooting, or Parkland..... I mean, those kids weren't practicing on SNESes. And the culture of violence that they engage in wasn't born from playing Mario Kart. True, they may have gotten target practice in Goldeneye, but Goldeneye was but a reaction to the Genesis. Again, fighting last gen's war. Genesis was, for lack of a better term, the Genesis of so many trends that we are still dealing with today, and the second and third-order effects are reverberating atm in shocking ways. Anyway, of course the Saturn was the nail in the coffin, and the Dreamcast was a joke, reduced to a state of mental ineptitude, resulting in Sega begging Softbank for money and being ruined.
Flowers for Algernon is, thus, an apt analogy for Sega's rise and fall that works on multiple levels. Both in terms of hardware dominance, intellectual rigor, and in spiritual terms. The analogy is sound. You might wonder, and check wikipedia on the year - was the book a reaction to Sega's rise and fall? It's one of those situations that is so prescient, you do a double-take on wikipedia. History is full of coincidences like this. I think in future generations, gaming and literature will be seen as different and unique facets of the same medium. The business of gaming is also fascinating imo. Many lessons can be drawn from the triumphs and travails of men like Kalinske or rogue scum like Perry or innovators like Naka.
``
Btw, @rsf goes too far imo. The Genesis was rife with intellectual content, albeit in more subtle ways than other consoles. The very name of the console was an allusion to a creation myth (yeah, that's right god boys, it's a myth, deal with it) which, though crude and not illustrative of the actual creation of the world, is still a more substantial name than, say, PlayStation. It also alluded to Sega's western-centric mindset. What name could be less Japanese than to use the opening chapter of a Book that is scarcely read in Japan yet is popular af in the Bible Belt, which is the Genesis' home turf? If you do a breakout by zip code, the Genesis was popular in rural areas where 3-wheelers and dirt bikes reigned supreme, but was also popular in college towns where intellectuals ruled the day. I used to have some of the most intellectual discussions in my young life after a session of Phantasy Star (albeit stoned out of my mind). Sure, don't get me wrong, Mortal Kombat and Doom were big as well. But there was an intellectual subset that was engaged with the Genesis. Many of us saw the name of the console as an exercise in irony, since it was so obvious to all of us that god did not exist. After all, what loving god could allow the Saturn and 32X to fail so disastrously? Two consoles, pitched at opposite ends of the gaming spectrum, covering both the intellectual and lower classes, and both failed. It was only the Genesis that was capable of marrying the two, both in experience as well as clientele. I could weave in and out of Shining Force in between X-men sessions on Genesis, and it was natural. But on 32X... I just wanted bloodshed and chaos. Something about it.
