There is a lot of amazing old stuff in Michigan's UP. Nowadays it's one of the least populated places east of the Mississippi. But there used to be a lot more people (and money) floating around up there due to mining, logging, & auto fortunes.

With a lot of the copper stuff, they just drilled super-deep shafts and just went at the ore with pneumatic drills and whatnot. The ore there was remarkably pure (even fucking Native Americans had extracted copper from these sites) A lot of the activity there predated the chemically-oriented extraction methods
There are a few areas were tailings were depositing that are kinda fucked but it's not that bad all things considered |

However, I've always thought it was a bit of a mess at the street level. It was built on top of an existing two story building, and the tower is set back pretty far from the street:
