The Guaranty Building: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prudential_(Guaranty)_Building

Really impressive in person. Thanks to BSD local law firm, Hodgson Russ, for renovating it when they moved offices.

Buffalo City Hall: http://www.buffaloah.com/a/niagSq/65/fac/fac.html

Ridiculous size and grandeur for the current state of the city, but it's a beautiful building. Free observation deck at the top, too. My grandpa worked there but I never visited his office.

cr, it would be unthinkable to have anything like that now. Not sure there's any appetite for the costs for something like that other than the upper tier of universities, which have cash to burn.

The building would be in disrepair without the law firm that saved it: https://www.hodgsonruss.com/Louis-Sullivans-Guaranty-Building.html

Calumet, Michigan

It was the biggest hotspot of copper mining in the post-Civil War era up until the early 1900's. In its heyday there were 30k+ people living there, now there are only about 700.

So you've got a number of awesome turn-of-the century buildings in this sparsely populated shitburg

The mining company headquarters (now the National Historical Park HQ):

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Keweenaw_National_Historical_Park_Headquarters.jpg

A 1,200 seat opera house (!):

The local fire station:

Yeah. Calumet is tucked away in a pretty distant part of Michgan's Upper Peninsula:

https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=47.247222,-88.454444&q=47.247222,-88.454444&hl=en&t=m&z=12

There is a lot of amazing old stuff in Michigan's UP. Nowadays it's one of the least populated places east of the Mississippi. But there used to be a lot more people (and money) floating around up there due to mining, logging, & auto fortunes.

Not too far away is this incredible estate that's been on the market for a few years now:

Many of these places aren't that bad. With a lot of the copper stuff, they just drilled super-deep shafts and just went at the ore with pneumatic drills and whatnot. The ore there was remarkably pure (even fucking Native Americans had extracted copper from these sites) A lot of the activity there predated the chemically-oriented extraction methods

There are a few areas were tailings were depositing that are kinda fucked but it's not that bad all things considered

Pasadena has some great architecture, not sure if it's underrated though.

Mobile, AL has several antebellum buildings and other architecture similar to that in New Orleans, but it doesn't get the same attention.

Also, as pointed out on XO before, it hasn't moved in centuries despite the name.

Is Miami underrated? Its populated by the worst people and there's nothing redeeming about living here. But as far as architecture, downtown is beautiful, esp considering it is about 25 years old. Sobe deco is probably better than even its lofty reputation, and the MiMo shit is also wonderful -- most of it in crack den motels now.

any decent sized city oriented around manufacturing that had its heyday before 50s suburbanization is going to have nice architecture. most of those were in the north

Chicago is routinely in the conversation for best architecture in the USA. Everyone agrees it and NYC are top two.

And if you throw in Minneapolis too, that would give quite a boost with the Frank Gehry building on the U of M campus (https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/acitymadebypeople/images/Articles/citinerary-minneapolis-weisman-03-morgan-sheff.jpg?mtime=20170127163142)

The Foshay Tower is pretty cool, It's meant to be something of an homage to the Washington Monument.

However, I've always thought it was a bit of a mess at the street level. It was built on top of an existing two story building, and the tower is set back pretty far from the street:

It would be soooo much better if they had put it right on a corner & used an original design for the ground level
