But many women (not all) in the upper classes saw the work their fathers and husbands were doing -- medicine, law, running businesses, being involved in politics, etc. -- as interesting and wanted in on it (clearly a different perspective when your husband is a lawyer not a coal miner and you are fairly comfortable -- i.e. bored -- and not just trying to hold things together and scrape by). Ultimately, after a few generations of resistance, the women in the upper classes were able to push their way into these realms without too much of a fight. At the end of the day, it wasn't a bad deal for the men in the upper classes. They didn't mind seeing their daughters take these roles over the sons of lesser families. And dual-incomes allowed them to become even more affluent, putting further separation between themselves and the middle/bottom of the income spectrum.

But, of course, there was a poisonous trickle-down effect. By entering the work force and taking jobs at the upper-end of the income spectrum, the daughters and wives of the upper class unquestionably displaced men at the margins of that class, or those striving to enter it, pushing them further down.

This was a major driver of increasing inequality. Imagine two couples: One elite couple where the man made 200k and his wife stayed at home, and a second, somewhat less elite, couple where the man made 100k and his wife stayed at home. With the influx of elite women into the workforce, the elite man's wife takes the second man's job and he is forced into a lower paying job. So now the first couple makes 300k, and in the second couple the man moves to a 75k job and his wife continues to stay home. Of course, by being pushed to the 75k job, the second man has displaced a third man. And so on and so on.

Eventually what happened is that working class couples who would have preferred to continue living the old way -- the man working to support his family while his wife stayed home to tend to the home and kids -- no longer had that option. Just to keep up, they both had to work jobs that were each shittier than the job which the man previously held and which had previously supported their whole family. Maybe the woman's job involves taking care of rich women's children instead of their own. If they can both even find jobs. More likely at least one can't find anything decent and is on pills, etc.

Meanwhile, the people at the top still have a choice -- work, don't work, work for a few years at six figs and then don't work, etc. So the people at the top like this arrangement -- they are continuing to accumulate more and more capital while having more labor and more consumers in the middle and at the bottom of the economy. They create the ideology of "lean-in" and labor as female empowerment and demean traditional child-rearing, etc. as a way of distracting women in the working classes from what's been stolen from them.
