We will (a) list the mod rules, and (b) list rulings. We will create a set of statutory-like rules, and common law-like readings of the rules.
[1] Outing. (a) No outing, except: (i) rachmiel-sponsored reactive outing; and (ii) self-outing on the board.
(b) A self-outing only occurs upon an outing that is (I) knowing, (II) voluntary, and (III) limited to the information outed.
(c) "Knowing" means being aware of the consequences of providing the referred-to-information.
(d) "Voluntary" means an outing under no threat, coercion, or other improper outside influence, such as opting for the lesser of two bad alternatives.
(e) "Limited to the information outed" means that information disclosed in the outing is the only information allowed to be used in that outing. An outing of one's employer, for instance, does not permit the outing of one's name.
[*Amended 10/14/15] (f) "Outing" includes (i) traditional outing as well as (ii) the use of outing information to stifle or eliminate another poster's presence on the board or post content in such a way as to have a significant chilling effect. Outing in instances as designed in (ii) above shall be determined only by rachmiel. [See e.g., Rasqie v. [2] Spam is not permitted. Spam is defined as repetitive posting which is (a) utterly without redeeming value and (b) that inhibits normal usage of the board. (E.g., The great Aznaznaznazn spamming of pre-09, but see: Bumping of non-rule violating threads is not spamming).
[3] No spoilers (you faggots). Spoilers in thread titles is a violation of this rule. Spoilers in posts are not. There can be no "spoiler" of content that has been published (not leaked) in its primary intended stream for at least 2 months.

You may not repoast other people's pics or outting material including names, links to articles, or enough details to positively identify someone without their express permission, and that permission can be revoked.
Please exercise caution in poasting material you would not like repoasted by assholes. This is the Internet, after all. You can't control people absolutely.
Also, mods need to set a good example and be particularly cautious about sharing info that could be used to harass them. Part of being a mod is getting fucked with by anyone who knows they can get a rise out of you. They will intentionally put you in a position where you feel you have to use your mod powers for something relating to you, and then you will look bad. It makes me look bad, too.

There are also issues of user base and saturation. For example, with relatively few new posters, it's kind of sensible to think of PN and Doobs's names as already being "out there" enough such that no new thread about them "outs" them. Everyone who's here already knows their names. But with a dynamic user base this principle would no longer make much sense. |

it's analogous to israel -- we can't just depend on the iron dome to shoot down every rocket launched by hamas. we need to get to the root of the problem and go in there and clean up the source of the rockets.
i dont think we need rules for exact punishment, but you should retain the discretion -- and actually use that discretion -- to IP ban proven outers. |

There should be no time limit on straight up spoilers, and at least a year before its for comedic effect. We're all adults and know how to make a non spoiling thread. To not do so is to lower the standard of the board. |

the only exception to this ever (that i'm aware of) is when rach outed Sonic Youth. i don't know if he was justified in doing that or not, but rex non potest peccare. for all the remaining non-rach posters there's no hard cases to worry about.
the only other limitation i guess would be posters who were "voluntarily" out like Joe_Caltech and GTO. cross that bridge if we come to it: i don't think we need to worry about anyone voluntarily associating their name with this place for a very long time. |
