Also CR he was good at this. I watched an episode years later once while at the gym or something and the blonde replacement just didn't have the same charisma.

A lot of elements went into this, and it was a well designed show.

The multiple choice format, which is unusual for a trivia show, helped proles follow along. If you give an open-ended prompt about the Battle of the Marne, the average viewer has no idea what you're on about and it's not fun for them-- hence why Jeopardy!, while popular, didn't have the same mass following. But if you give the viewers A/B/C/D, people can make a guess and still be playing at home, kinda. Plus the early questions are so easy that even proles can be happy they got SOMETHING right.

The 50/50 lifeline didn't do much, but the ask the audience or phone a friend were both good television-- again, do you trust the audience, will your friend actually know the answer, etc.

And the decision to walk away with current money or gamble added another fun element, and again people at home could argue about strategy or say what they would do.

Throw in a million dollar prize-- which at the time was a fair amount of money-- and you have some winning television. If they asked the exact same questions with a $500,000 prize but didn't have lifelines or multiple choice, then it would have been a dud.

Also the title itself was perfectly calibrated to catch proles' attention. "Who wants to be a millionaire? Wait a second, that's me!"

CR CR CR. Compare with "Are you smarter than a fifth grader?" which early in dev life was "Do you remember fifth grade?" (or something like that).

While taking a vacation after his win, Carpenter considered quitting his job with the IRS, but eventually decided against it. He explained to Kiplinger's Personal Finance that "after the taxes, it's not change-your-life kind of money if you want to eat every day."[10]

I can't imagine what it must have been like to watch that on television back then. On this clip, it seems staged because the audience drowns out the call and you never hear Dad's voice again.

it had a particular way of going viral, you'd hear Howard Stern talking about it, you'd probably see clips on Access Hollywood, shit like that. people talked about it at watercoolers.

It got to a certain critical mass where America basically stopped doing what it was doing at 8 Eastern time to see if anyone would actually get the million dollars. Weird cultural moment that I don't think is possible anymore.

It was sort of the last gasp of network TV (along with American Idol) to produce huge audiences like that. Everything became so fragmented not long after.

lol, kind of insane that the last gasp of paid TV doing the same thing was GoT, and both immediately vanished from the public consciousness the moment they were off the air (or in Millionaire's case, left prime time for the daytime TV abyss).

I hate the show so much now. They take forever to do one question before cutting to commercial. That or it’s the celeb version in which the questions are hella easy so the c list celeb can feel good about himself.
