This is a huge issue that is not talked about enough. People should really support small, local farmers

this twitter's thesis seems to be that farm industry should sacrifice short term profit incentive for overall longterm social good. ljl at our ability to do such a thing anymore

the idea that boomers have basically salted the soil for 80 years is unreal

Gov. Youngkin is huge friend of the American farmer. Hopefully, more mainstream politicians will take farmers seriously.

bullshit. maybe the cornbelt has some special conditions, but soil is not as weak as his claims make it appear.

also, here grazing after harvest is absolutely still common practice.

it seems he's got knowledge of corn farming in Iowa and extrapolating that across an entire country.

corn is not farmed the same way rice, etc are. ag articles are almost universally bad. go talk to an actual farmer.

This is happening because Russia and Belarus stopped exporting fertilizer over Ukraine tensions. Half of global fertilizer supply comes from Russia and Belarus is 20% of the potash. If Putin takes Ukraine he will control 60% of global fertilizer. Russia isnt just an oil and gas power. It feeds the planet. Vlad will starve 100 million niggers and trigger the biggest migrant crisis yet if Biden really sanctions him.

None of this is true. America has enormous domestic potash production to call on and doesn't even get it's nitr supply mostly from Russia. You're fucking stupid. Funny whenever you opine about a topic I know a lot about it's always completely wrong.

This all seems retarded. The much dumber aspect of US agriculture is that we do a ton of it in places like California where water is scarce. A proper industrial ag policy that helped to maximize our richest soil land, compensated the are country midwesterners fairly, made most efficient use of water is an obvious policy intervention that eg China would do in a heartbeat but because our constitution and system of government gives farmers in BFE outsized political power we are stuck with farmers in Arizona gobbling up water and pumping their shit soil full of chemicals to try to pretend they aren’t doing something that nature hates and won’t tolerate. This, health care, beating China in green energy and being the world leader in cybersecurity are what will cause America’s socialist revolution in the 2030s-40s.

If the 20th century proved anything it’s that central planning is clearly a more efficient way to structure agricultural production. This is a significantly underplayed advantage for China and Russia as the global population continues to spike.

True but a much easier problem to fix with regulatory interventions. The specific problem of the midwestern family farmer getting fucked is largely a legacy of the 80s deregulation and subsequent regulatory capture by Big Ag. What I am proposing would be a way to help that problem while also fixing a wild geographic mismatch that we should all acknowledge as obviously dumb.

No I mean they are also killing the soil and depleting water reserves, the difference is the desert just goes back to desert, the Midwest will be worse than it ever would have been under competent management

My point is that farmers in Arizona have to use chemicals and shitloads of water to make their crops grow in shit soil. If the only problem is Big Ag lobbyists “self policing” and using the regulatory state as a means to stomp on family farms, that’s a much more solvable political problem.

I look forward to Arizona farmers getting their asses kicked in the next decade or two. When things get tough, the people in Arizona have decades of success in getting their water. And farmers, who use 70% of it, are a juicy target.
