Putin's increased oil prices significantly, likely for a good while as well, so Russia's economic situation is much better now. Sanctions counteract that, which mean that he wants to see those go away or get reduced.
He's also taken some territory in regions that are predominately Russian, so he can incorporate those places into Russia and has some nominal gains there, plus a nationalistic legacy.
If there are negotiations to allow some of the Ukrainian regions to vote to become part of Russia, redrawing of borders in a more solid faction and a permanent stalemate/cessation of hostilities from both sides, there is no longer a NATO issue if there has been a mutually agreeable outcome. |
