Original GoT felt 180 because it depicted an autist's work of fiction with all its blood and glory and autistic intricacies. Even the vast amounts of nudity and sex depicted didn't feel incessant with the rest of the storyline and how it was depicted.
House of Dragons OTOH feels like they just maximized the shrewiest palace intrigue stuff without any of the autistic war machinations and planning or 180 boss characters like Tywin Lannister. Maybe it's just a random sideplot they're getting way too into but it currently feels like it's just women gossiping about each other.

is there a new season out or something?
i watched the first few eps, but all of the world-making was either ignored or shuffled off to GOT.
there were no commoners, no peasants, no minor characters, no neighborhoods, no religion, just a tacit assumption that you know most of this from GOT and now the royal characters get to talk and fight more.

It’s actually good. Game of thrones did not really have many commoner characters either, they were only really involved to the extent they dealt with nobles , and the religious stuff was pretty cursory.
House of the Dragon has significantly better acting from the leads. I’m sure she is not popular in the autoadmit environment but the lead actress is excellent, far better than the GoT leads (other than Dinklage).
The show is really about mutually assured destruction and the short term decisions in civil war that result in long term destruction of the ruling house. It’s a prisoners dilemma show. Surprisingly sophisticated for hbo slop, not sopranos level or anything but not just schlock either. Eg much of the recent episodes have been focused on a story where they discover that some people of low birth have the ability to bond with the dragons and ride em into battle. There is a real question about whether the one faction should use this - the Targaryen monopoly on dragons was the core of their power, but this faction is losing and desperate. It’s complicated by the fact that the losing factions heir apparent is also a bastard and his only real claim to legitimacy is that he could ride a dragon around and torch shit. Also what happens when you place the medieval fantasy equivalent of an aircraft carrier in the hands of a random commoner with no real ties of loyalty.
Obviously it’s all dorky shit but it’s cool slow burn with the dragons as symbol of not just military power but political legitimacy. Of course at the end all the dragons are going to kill each other and cause the legitimacy crisis that results in Targaryen expulsion centuries later.

Rhaenyra is an infinitely more interesting and dynamic character than her GOT counterpart, Daenerys, who for 5 seasons traveled around the dessert conquering cities, liberating slaves and fucking chads. The actress also just nails every scene.
It feels like there is a lot of groundwork being laid for the sea snake to have a really interesting arc in the coming season(s) as well.

i agree the acting of that actress in particular is phenomenal -- not a shitlib, but even i am more aware of shit women deal with that goes past us watching this show -- but i dont think the writing captures the full destructive extent of civil wars outside of palace intrigue stuff. GOT didnt show many 'commoners' but loads of scenes depicting everyday life for them, where they hung out, introducing them as interesting characters however shortlived (eg the lannister soldiers arya chills with in the forest that one time, one of them wanted a daughter cause 'sons just go off to fight some lord's war, daughters take care of their daddies'), plus just a lot more actual war scenes that really demonstrated a lot of characters' charisma, competency, killer instinct, intelligence, etc. or lack thereof.
it's like it's taking one small strand of what made GOT great and just focusing on it while kinda sidelining the other stuff. GOT would've had a lot more coverage of the various green vs black houses battles and such. right now we just learn about most of that in passing when the royal council meets.
