A plain reading of the Torah suggests that the LORD is worried about his reputation. If his own people don't worship him, that makes him look bad. Yes, this implies there are other gods, and indeed Deuteronomy 32, properly interpreted, does say the LORD is one god among many, but Israel is his special divine property.

There's a theory that speech gave humans the unique ability to lie, and that our instinct for religion evolved as a coping mechanism to compensate for it. I've tried bouncing this off a few LLMs lately and it's interesting how they react, depending on how you frame the discussion.
