I think smallpox was ONLY deadly to native Americans and only caused skin disfigurement in whites. At least one medical textbook from the 19th century treats it like a skin disease

It's hard to know what was lost with all the die-off. When Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked in North America he described some of the tribes as very well built and well organized relative to the others, but all of the people he encountered got wiped out so we don't know who they were. One of them didn't keep any kind of calendar but kept really good track of the stars, while none of the others followed the stars but were into sun/moon cycles.
