- saying "anymore" instead of "nowadays," e.g. "kids are always looking at screens anymore"

- saying "whenever" instead of "when," e.g. "whenever my dad died, I paid off my debts"

I haven't heard people talk like this. Is this a regional thing?

I've also heard of people mixing leave and let, which is another one I've never actually experienced.

Axe a question is especially grating. I say this as someone who is a big fan of AAVE. I think it's a wonderful dialect. That being said I can't take anyone seriously who says axe.

This is a fun one but in Québec they have an expression «Je m'en bas les couilles» which means "I'm beating my balls with it." It's used similarly to I could care less or I don't give a fuck. Often used sarcastically when someones says something they think is important and you have zero interest in it. Also rly funny how girls say this a lot.

My biggest pet peeve is when gunneratttt uses nonplussed in its nouveau Reddit-chic usage to mean not completely happy when it really means shocked to the point of speechlessness. It's supposed to mean "I can't even..." but the internet crowd has lazily repurposed it. gunneratttt says nonplussed wrong about 5 times per month.

I guess one good thing about woke is that people have become more descriptivist about grammar. Kids are (I think) being taught more that dialect-specific vernacular isn't WRONG, just nonstandard English.

that kind of old world vernacular has been overshadowed by absurd gen slang, like "ain't" was abrasive to her but at least it's intelligible. Total White Death, she was one of two black teachers we had and didn't last long.

Cr it's a lot "67" type nonsense and also a lot of the things they say are constructed so as NOT to communicate information. Like apparently it's common for them to say, "That's not..." and that's it, that's the whole sentence. And even the expression "it made me feel some kind of way" makes me think language is kind of going backwards. The point of communicating your feelings is to use your words to say what they are.

A Gen Z African American gentleman recently told me that a woman he knew "sold X." I was very confused. It seemed like he was saying that she was an ecstasy dealer. After pressing him for more information he revealed that what he meant was she broke up with her boyfriend before he started working out and lost a lot of weight and got jacked. She sold her exbf when he was at a low point and now he's handsome. She sold ex.

That was a lot to unpack!

The town was named after Delhi, India, in honor of founder Ebenezer Foote, who was known as "The Great Mogul". The pronunciation is attributed to Foote's rival Erastus Root, who reportedly exclaimed upon learning of the town's name, "Delhi, Hell-high! Might as well call it Foote-high."[4] An alternate explanation of its pronunciation and namesake is due to its location, high on the Delaware River.[3]

My favorite little opera that you see play out around dissonant modern language is Southerners bewildered looks when Yankee shitlibs try to adopt regional vernacular and colloquialisms because they want to sound Black and don’t realize that they instead sound Hick.

Especially funny with shitlib transplants who got forcibly relocated by their NE megacorp overlords to Nashville, Tallahassee, Dallas, etc.

Sounds incredibly cringe. Ya I've noticed on the internet people seem to classify things as AAVE that I just think of as southern.

They're very close in any case and one is descended from the other.

What's funny to me is people who think words like ain't are distinctly southern or distinctly black when they were recorded first in England many centuries ago. To wit much of what we attribute to southern or black culture in speech and lexicon comes from poor people from England a million years ago. We should get John McWhorter to do a guest poast about this.

when you catch blacks having a particularly good day they'll call you "sugar" or "baby" (hon and darlin are white) and I imagine this was EPAH's first erection.

Others that could be perceived as generally southern but are in fact white:

sir/ma'am

directly (soon)

old lexical devices related to hunting, fishing (hotter n blue blazes, varmint, that dog won't hunt, fine as frog's hair) but not really used in everyday conversation you're just expected to understand and agree

Yanks REALLY like "y'all"

I kind of think grammatical failures are things along the lines of “and then he said he is going to drive there”. Those in OP are comprehension failures.

Never understood the hate/misunderstanding of "could care less". It's just sarcasm. Like saying "Yeah, I give a fuck" when you actually do not give a fuck. Why don't people get this?

95% of people who say “could care less” don’t understand that. They think they’re saying “couldn’t care less.”

Personally I don’t mind “could care less” cause it sounds better. Rolls off the tongue cleaner. But let’s not pretend it isn’t prole.

Good point, hadn't thought of it that way, but I agree with Big Clique Energy that most of them probably don't intend it as sarcastic
