I keep seeing 'highest price since 2022!' but I don't really remember why it was so much. Just because of Biden and his admin killing off oil deals? I do recall at some point under Trump (2017???) it briefly cost more to storage a barrel of crude than it did to produce.

Price collapse in 2020 (remember negative prices?) led to zero investment in production which led to high prices. Which led to more investment, which led to lower prices, and so on. Lack of a domestic cartel practically ensures boom and bust cycles in oil and gas. There’s a six-12 month lag from investment to production.

I think there is a pseudo-cartel forming in the US given the major mergers in the shale patches over the last few years. The Majors are the only ones that can invest in the requisite technology to continue driving output while at the same time managing the supply.

In some ways we are reverting to a new form of the old Seven Sisters model IMO.

Independents own, operate, and drill ~85 percent of domestic onshore oil wells. The majors are pretty much limited to major plays like Permian, DJ, and Eagleford. Everything else is legacy.

other reasons mentioned in this thread are correct, but also need to factor in that the government gave everyone $3,200 in stimulus checks (most which happend pre-Biden)
