Don’t you need a car when you get to any of these cities besides SF and maybe San Diego (if you’re staying downtown)? Doesn’t that diminish the supposed emissions reductions from everyone taking the train/wouldn’t it clog the streets up with just as many Ubers/rental cars as if these people had driven their own cars? I just have a hard time believing some shithead is going to take an expensive ass train from Merced to Bakersfield, and then be pleased to spring for a ton of Ubers or a rental car.

My counterpoint to this would be that HSR makes sense to link DC/Baltimore/Wilmington/Philly/NYC/Boston because you can get to what you need to do in those cities by public transit or even walk from the train station. But not sure that’s true about many of the cities that will be served by HSR in CA. (Lol - they will never actually be served, because it will never be finished).

They both are trains that connect point a to point b. Why the fuck should we spend trillions so dc lobbyists can meet in person with Wall Street kikes slightly quicker? Tell those fuckers to do teams calls like everyone else.

yes, high speed rail connecting cities to each other is stupid unless there's also a local transit system to get around easy. even if there is it still is stupid.

The US had the best intercity rail system in the world — and streetcars in every decent sized town — before the civil rights movement.

Who is even commuting from bakersfield to fresno or whatever? They wanted high speed rail cause it was "euro coded" and it was the obama era when Libs really were going all in on that, but couldn't build anywhere convenient cause of geography iirc

They should have just skipped all the central valley cities and have it run next to the 5 straight from LA to SJ/SF. Seems like they are in too deep to abandon the project, but hard to see how it will initially be better than flying from LA to SF. Still feels like there’s a chance the whole thing will fall through. If not, finished by 2045

The Grapevine is way too steep for rail lines, so running parallel to 5 was never a viable option. They had to follow the I-15 corridor into LA, and if you have to make that detour to the east anyway, you may as well add some stops at the bigger cities in the Central Valley.

If everything goes as planned, it will go from SF to LA in about two and a half hours, which is faster than flying once you take into account security lines and waiting at the gate. And the theory is that the high speed rail would make it viable to live in someplace like Gilroy (or even the Central Valley) and commute to LA/SF, which might help make housing more affordable. But at the current price tag, it is going to be a long time before they break even on this project.

(Guy way more informed than me)

I give it until 2050 for the first ride from LA to SF. They bumped it up to $140 Bil/ open 2040.

The issue isn’t the high speed rail. It’s why it costs so much and takes so long to build.

i thought it was mostly because the rights-of-way were too expensive to do an LA-SF route. which is a retarded reason (if you can't build what you need, why build at all), but at least coherent. but it doesn't seem to have resulted in any cost savings regardless, so...

i am a URBAN PLANNING MASTERMO and the prob is u need to do shit like HSR, light rail, metros ASAP when u are economically ready because the cost of land is the BIGGEST expense and as u become richer it just becomes way more exp. this is why a place like indonesia is so furked, when they were growing fast in 70s and 80s they didnt build shit, now it costs a fortune

US cld have done this shit in 70s when japan was acing it but cause of NIGGAS and BIRDSHIT RETARDATION they didnt. now its just too furking expensive

gorgeous india despite being a shithole is VEDDY wise building tons of metro and now HSR early at just 3k per capita, it will end up veddy veddy nice

If you're talking about a direct LA-to-SF route (via the I-5 route rather than east through the Central Valley), that was never a viable option because the Grapevine is too steep for rail lines. My understanding is that even the eastern route is going to require a million tunnels, which is part of why the price tag is so high. To follow the I-5 corridor, you would have had to dig a massive tunnel under the San Gabriel Mountains. (Although given the costs of rights-of-way, that might have ended up being cheaper.)
