the teachers at those schools are a mix crotchbag old nuns, bigger crotchbag old bats who hate their husbands and take it out on the boys they teach, depressed moms looking for free tuition, and losers who haven't cracked their way into the public school system.

no one ever is around the priests

Weird and false. There is usually a priest who maintains an office and position of authority in the religion department and as of the late 90s/early 00s it was still very common for that priest to also take a keen interest in the most troubled kids, especially the ones with lean, lithe bodies and very youthful skin. I’d like to think that they crack down on that kind of thing now, but knowing the sociopath closet cases that the U.S. Catholic Church tends to attract and maintain loyalty from I am highly skeptical that a motivated priest who maintains a position of authority with a Catholic school would not be able to lean on a couple admin figures enough to get approval for his “youth group” meeting after school.

This was literally 100% word for word true at the east coast catholic high school that I and my older brothers attended for most of two decade period between the mid 80s and early 00s. The priest who was there in my day was accused of attempting to molest the troubled half Mexican half Italian boy (with no dad in the picture ofc) that was two grades ahead of me and regularly skipped class to hang out in the priest’s office any time he was “having a tough time.”

Girl I went to highschool with now runs admissions at our old school. She said Catholic highschools struggle with the goal of 50% matriculation from Catholic feeder schools. Most of the elementary schools subsidized for Hispanics who don't make the jump to college prep schools. But at the same time Seattle prep is $25k a year, and yeah no thanks. The cheapest highschool anywhere close to us is $15k. Plus the schools are in actual cities where nobody is having kids.

Ha I know a girl with the exact same job at my old high school. Other than the massive collapse in church revenues the big issue is on the east coast is the flight of families with school aged kids to farther flung exburbs. So where you used to have a school in an inner ring suburb that was on the subway line and had more profile (and therefore got more support from) the archdiocese in the city, now that school is closed and the parish connected to it is 80+% retirees at mass every Sunday. Our school had enough of an athletics profile to just say fuck it and move out to the exburbs while they also 7x’d tuition over the last 25 years. I give them credit for seeing the trends and problems early, but it is kind of hilarious that the answer ended up being “fuck the church, we worship football and basketball now.”

Same 20 kids from k-8, then combined that from 8-10 feeder schools. I literally took a bath with the girl that was valedictorian at our school. I did this in kindergarten which is odd still.

our K-8 classes were 35 kids per homeroom (2x per grade). there was like no turnover so the one or two new kids every year would be a big deal.

HS was like any other HS where the AP/honors kids were kept away from the gen pop. and it was stratified by the rich/prole/spic feeder schools so that was an added element to the clique dynamic.

35 is big. Our elementary class was the biggest at 25. Grade below us had 12 kids. I took AP and didn't feel segregated at all. Fucking pointless. We had 10 black kids in highschool and 8 played basketball. We won the state championship. Two guys went on to the NBA.

I did jr high at one in a shitty east coast city (think poughkeepsie, allentown, trenton, hempstead). a lot of kids went there to avoid the city schools. we had a good basketball team if you know what I mean.

smaller enrollment was annoying as everyone knew everyones business. nice part was getting friends from outside your neighborhood. overall the tuition was cheap so the school was underfunded and looked like shit.

I always tell people that there is a big difference between a private school (a bmw) and a catholic school (a honda civic with rims).

Yes but as mentioned above the inner-ring suburb ones and working class neighborhood ones are struggling because those people have moved out, lots of the parish elementary feeder schools have closed or have like 10-12 poor kids per class, families are much smaller, and people aren’t as religious. The locally elite ones are still doing fine but faculties are even more lay now than they were in the 90s/00s.

My K-8 did, too, and there’s also been very little change to the local demographics. 225-240 kids attended and kept the parish alive when I was a kid. I remember my dad hustling us to get to mass early on Sundays so that we wouldn’t have to stand in the back. A couple of years ago I checked a livestream of a Sunday 10:30am mass and there were 4 people watching it and 11 people in the church. Only a matter of time before the church is closed and merged. Without the schools and the men’s, women’s, teens, etc. groups that there use to be, these places have no life.
