Around 6pm I was standing out front, staring at the flag when the Brigade sergeant major walked out and asked me if I knew why it was at half staff. I thought about it for a few seconds, then replied that it was the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He seemed dumbfounded as he expected me to have no idea since I was pretty young and a low rank at the time. I ended up working for him a week later as his assistant.
